Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
What isn't to like about this jacket? Every time I come across other brands' down jackets I check them out thinking I will find the next great thing. But they simply never come close to matching this jacket in it's versatility. The entire thing is VERY well thought out. I still have yet to find another jacket that is as light and warm that has zip-off sleeves which are perfect! I wear only the vest on mild days, the entire thing when it gets really cold or windy, and sometimes just the sleeves at night when sleeping since I like to sleep with my arm extended at night and it often isn't covered by my bag. It is lighter than most all 800-fill down jackets I look at, but it's filled with Primaloft, one of the best synthetic fills I have found and is GUARANTEED not to lose it's thermal properties IF it gets wet. That of course is also not likely to happen given the Pertex shell that covers it which is both wind and waterproof.
I have taken this with me to Mongolia in November when the temps were -50* and the winds were 20-30 mph and I was the only one of my group of colleagues that was even remotely warm the entire trip. I simply can't say enough about this jacket, especially since even at full price it's priced substantially below the comparative 800-fill down jackets. Considering I got an older, discontinued color for half price was even better. Definitely one of the best purchases that I have ever made.

Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
I bought this jacket for working outside at night in Nashville winters and love it. Last winter, I wore it daily in 20 degree weather as an outer layer. Despite the thinness of the jacket, it truly blocked the wind and kept me warm. I was sure the jacket would tear easily in the rough environment in which I work, but I am starting my second winter with it and it still has no holes. My only complaint is that it isn't very attractive.

Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
This is a great design for a jacket. The materials are awesome the zippered sleeves are awesome. The fit however is terrible. This jacket is not active cut in anyway. When I put it on I was instantly disappointed by the mass of loose fabric all over my body. This jacket is not meant for people who are tall and skinny. Unless you have a beer gut or you like the baggy look this is not the jacket for you. If I had to compare the cut to another brand it would be TNF they seem to make everything for the "average" sized person as well.
With that said I opted for the Arc. Atom LT jacket just because the fit is much nicer.
Would I recommend this to a friend? Depends on the size of his gut.

Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
I agree with most of these reviews. Unlike some, I don't think the jacket is cut too big, because I often wear a base layer and sweater underneath.
The jacket is very warm, especially given its thinness. It's a great windblocker, and retains body heat even in strong winds. I like the form-fitting neck, which keeps heat from escaping from the top of the jacket.
It seems almost magical the way the jacket regulates heat. It's not too hot to wear inside warm buildings, but it provides much warmth, even down to 25F. It also packs into a compression sack, which is included.
My only two concerns: The zipper does get caught easily; I have to hold my finger behind it to keep the fabric out. More worrisome is the strength of the fabric, which feels tissue thin. No rips yet, but I do think it could be an issue. I wear this jacket alone for shopping and walking around the neighborhood, but I put some kind of top layer on whenever I'm doing any real activity that could damage the jacket.

....to keep you warm then buy this jacket. The previous review is correct. Killer coat if you are overweight. Why the heck didn't REI make it more trim fitting? So close but yet so far. Are they trying to sellout to the NASCAR crowd to make up for poor holiday sales or something?!? Re-style for next season and you will have a winner. ;)

Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
I waited a few months to really put this jacket through its paces before I reviewed it. I don't think that I've been happier with a piece of clothing. I use it everyday. I wear it under my summer motorcycle jacket in the winter to extend my riding season. It then packs small enough to fit in my helmet when I'm at work. I use it as an all-around winter jacket when doing everything from taking my son to the park to grocery shopping. It drops the wrinkles after being in the stuff sack amazingly quick. I used it just today on a day hike in 32* when it went from pouring to sleeting and back to pouring again. I allowed the jacket to get soaked to test primaloft's insulation capabilities. It performed without fail. I have not had the durability issues that other reviewers have had. I used it on black friday while waiting outside of REI in below freezing windy conditions and was comfortable. Again, I can't say enough about this jacket. I bought mine a little bigger for layering purposes. I find that the best insulation is offered when air can get trapped between your body and the outside world. I bought this jacket for a winter backpacking trip that I am taking in January but have found that I can wear it in all conditions. The most versatile jacket I've owned...hands down.

I bought this one in the BlackFriday period with price [$]. So to me it's a nice buy. The temperature in here is quite high, I cannot test whether it is windproof or warm - It should work for -25F instead of 40F in here. So far so good. I hear the complaints that this one is easy to wear, so far I haven't notice any problems. I would suggest to add a hood( a hat ) and change the outershell to cotton or something else waterproof, the silk texture is really too delicate.

My wife and I own 4 of these and they are wonderful. Very warm but comfortable and layer well. The only jacket we found with the removable sleeve feature. When used for fly fishing, they break the wind well, resist water well and the outer fabric is a lot more durable than it looks.

Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
I recently wore this jacket for ice climbing and a winter traverse of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. It worked really well in cold, windy conditions both as a belay jacket and under a softshell. And, it was soft, comfortable and warm inside a sleeping bag on very cold nights. The jacket was exactly what I was looking for and did exactly what I needed it to do.

Comments about REI Spruce Run Jacket - Men's:
This jacket is more of a "down" sweater in my opinion and I chose the Med instead of the large to get that type of fit. Weight size Med 14.8 + 0.5 stuffsack. Two top end materials Primaloft and Pertex give it the toughness, light weight, warmth, and moisture resistance needed for extreme conditions. Down is great as long as it is dry, get it wet and you have major problems. My only complaint with this jacket is the lack of a removable hood. The vest/jacket option is great as activity levels change. It shed water in a light rain and kept me warm in low 30s with just a base layer. Me: hiker, ww kayaker, XC/BC/alpine skier.
