Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
Be forewarned! My recommendation: its a great idea, but do NOT purchase this product until its been redesigned.
I saw this product at a specialty sporting goods store in Leadville, Colorado and thought that I could finally have my favorite type of coffee (French press) on the trail or at my desk at work. Yes, it makes fine coffee (as expected) but I was extremely disappointed when I poured my first cup and coffee spilled all over the place! If I'd been backpacking and used this without knowing I'd end up having coffee down my sleeve, I'd be furious. It needs to be redesigned. I should not have to retrofit this product with a silcone part from another product (as mentioned by another reviewer).

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
This is my favorite french press. I even use it at home. It is compact. Everything fits into the press pot, even coffee grounds. The mug keeps your coffee warm and the protective sleeve makes sure you dont burn your hands. And it makes great coffee! Another great product from GSI.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
As far as making a good cup of coffee, this press works as well as any other I have tried. However, the thing is very sloppy when pouring and requires Herculean strength to press. The gasket that keeps the grinds seperate is also kind of a pain as it traps grinds that are difficult to remove and gets mucked up as a result. The plastic on the presser component (the part with the screen) also warped on mine from the heat and pressure (at least I think that is why, but maybe also due to stuck grinds in the gasket). Though the coffee is good, the functionality suffers in the unit I purchased. I will be returning it soon.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
I would have rated this a five if the product allowed you to pour coffee without it running down the side. It made great coffee and did it much faster than a peculator type maker when car camping. I used a regular grind for a drip coffee maker and had no issues with grinds in my coffee.
Best of all, this thing packs up nice and tight to take up little space on your pack.
Great product, but be careful when you pour. Wasted coffee is a NO NO.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
At first I thought this product was great for how compact it was. Yes, it does make a great cup of coffee, is lightweight, and durable. However, it has one major flaw. Every time that I go to pour a cup, it drips down the side into the sleeve and all over onto the floor. Kind of a drawback for me.

This is a great item to have when you're looking for a "pick me up" in the middle of nowhere. It's small and packs easily. It produces a delicious cup of coffee provided that the instructions are followed. The carafe/maker stays hot for a while as does the cup.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
Bought this to be able to make decent coffee while deployed. Went with the durable travel design due to needing something that can hold up to not so friendly environments. This Java Press does just that. Very easy to use, simple to clean and for the most part shatter proof. Just throw it in the back of the hummer with the rest of the gear and go. Its the small niceties like a nice cup of fresh coffee that makes life a little more enjoyable at times.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery was fast, product arrived in perfect condition. Will do business with REI again for sure!

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:
I tried the Java Press the day after I got it following the directions on the box. The coffee was delicious and just as good as a $3.00 gourmet shop. Also had a problem with liquid dribbling down the side of the press. I found a silicone seal from an insulated coffee mug and fit that on the lid of the press and VOILA it worked perfectly and no more leaks. Its a beauty now!!

Just received it and tried it out this weekend. I like the way it all fits compactly together and is easy to assemble. Had no problems in operating the filter etc. AND YES IT DID LEAK DOWN THE SIDE WHEN POURING IT OUT. BUT I FOUND A SILICON GASKET OFF OF AN OLD INSULATED COFFEE MUG PUT ON THE LID AND VOILA NO MORE LEAKS!! It makes one of the better brews of coffee I've tasted

Want coffee when you're backpacking, here's how to do it. I've been lugging the REI stainless steel press around for years now. Great product but not for packing. This baby was the ticket. two cups, press works great. Very happy I purchased this.
