The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
Great, great box. Just took a 1300 mile trip in december back east and it held up great. It holds a ton of stuff and I didn't notice a difference in gas mileage. The fit on my 2005 nissan xterra is perfect.[...]

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
I returned a Thule Ascent 1600 for this Yakima box after the Thule key broke off in the lock. In contrast to the Thule, which requires that you put all of the torque to open the latch on a small, flimsy key, the Yakima has a sturdy metal latch handle that opens the box. The Yakima lid also seems more rigid and is easier to engage. I would definitely recommend the Yakima.
As an aside, the REI return/exchange process was AWESOME, fast and painless.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
Bought this box a few weeks back and it has been great. The installation is easy and feels very secure. One of the nice things about the box is it is accessible from both sides. Able to hold a lot of gear including snowboards and golf bags. The only negative is the black box heats up from the sun and the Silver option is a little pricey. As long as you don't need to store heat sensitive items in here this should work great for you.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
I ordered both the Skybox 12 and 16 for my 05 Outback because I didn't know which would fit better without hitting the back hatch. Before ordering I called Yakima to ask which would fit and they said only the 16 will fit both the older Outbacks and the new Outbacks without hitting the back hatch. They were absolutely right. The 12 hits the back hatch no matter how you try to move crossbars or the clamps. It doesn't fit an Outback without hitting the back, regardless of what anyone will tell you. I did not want to bother with worrying about the hatch getting scratched or even broken every time the box on top. I was first worried about the 16 not being long enough to hold bigger skis, like 185s but the bulk of the time this will see use is on family trips and the occasional camping trip. I don't have skis that big right now and I doubt I'll ever own boards that big. Let's be honest here, this box is holding the pack and play, the stroller, the swing, etc. The nice thing is, unlike the 12, the 16 is big enough to hold all of that plus skis, boots, helmets, packs, etc too. I went with practical and for the most use I'll get out of it. Get this box if you own an Outback or other wagon that you need hatch clearance on. It has plenty of room for anything you'll ever need to carry.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
I bought this cargo box for my minivan. Used for carrying camping gear: 6 sleeping bags, 6 folding chairs, large tent, and a few more items. In winter had 6 pairs of skis in it. Easy to secure items inside the box with bungee cords (has aluminum bars along sides on inside). Has very sturdy construction. Box attaches to a roof rack very easily. Keeps items safe and secure. Just the right size for me. Very minimum wind resistance. Nothing bad to say. Thank you Yakima and REI.
Service and delivery comments:
REI store personel hepled me to chose the right cargo box, based on my needs and helped to installed on a roof rack.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
We bought this box about two years ago for our subaru outback. Initially I loved it. It is a good size for the car and could store quite a few things (golf clubs, skateboards, BOB our stroller). The levers to open the box are very poorly constructed and engineered. On a recent road trip I couldn't get either side to open. I finally got one side pryed open and inspected it. There was nothing blocking the locking lever and none of the items in it had shifted ( two collapsing chairs, two sleeping bags and a tent.) Thankfully I was able to get it open or our camping trip would have been cut short. I ended up having to drill out the rivits to open it again. The rivits holding the locking mechanism in place make it impossible to fix on my own.[...]. I plan on replacing it with a different brand pending the locking/ opening mechanism.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
This year will be the third season I've taken the wife and two kids out west for a cross-country vacation. We typically drive 3,500-4,000 miles per trip. This year will be two trips like this.
As the kids get older their luggage grows as well. I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee which works great, but leaves us short room for all of our stuff.
To help things out this year I picked up this box, which will let me get a few of the suitcases, pillows, and blankets out of the cabin. This will ensure I can see out the back window.
I looked at the Yakima guide online to see what vehicles the box would fit and found that the Grand Cherokee was NOT on the list. This didn't make sense to me, since I've got the factory roof rack with cross bars. I bought the box anyway and found it fit great on the factory rack.
After driving it on a day with a LOT of wind I found out why Yakima doesn't recommend using the factory rack. The Jeep factory cross bars are just too flexible, bouncy, and generally not very strong or secure. Trucks passing by would really shake the box, making me incredibly nervous about it coming loose.
No damage to the box or rack, but the factory rack just wouldn't work, so I had to shell out big bucks for the Yakima rack. So far so good, and it seems much more stable than the factory rack.
It mounts easily and seems very stable once attached. The key cylinders were easily changed to match the locks on my towers.
Overall, the only complaint I have about any Yakima products is the price. Yeah, it's good stuff, but holy cow! You'd think their products were gold plated!

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
I bought this just over a year ago for transporting camping equipment but have only used it half a dozen times or so. The box is very roomy and the space is well designed - it certainly carries all I want and leaves just enough space on the roof for a set of skis or maybe even a kayak. Unfortunately it does not feel very sturdily constructed - you have to be quite careful that the (very bendy) lid aligns properly as you close it. Furthermore, I've had a problem where one of the side releases has broken. Looking at it, it relies on a thin piece of plastic to move a tightly sprung steel rod. It's not surprising that it's failed. Fortunately, REI stand behind the products they sell and have offered to replace it. I think I'll give the same product another try - it's possible I was just unlucky with one that had a manufacturing defect.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
I got this box as a substitute for a Thule Ascent 1600 (sold out at the time). This is a well made box that is easy to open. It is very stable at freeway speeds. I had it up to about 80mph with no concerns. There was hardly any noise coming off of it at that speed and it was empty, I only heard it because I was specifically listening for it, otherwise you shouldn't even notice it (depending on how you mounted it and your vehicle). As far as vehicle performance or drag from the box goes, I didn't notice it at all, other than the wind will move your vehicle around a bit more. Attachment to the rack is very easy, quick and secure. Now for the cons: It weighs roughly 10 pounds more than the Thule Acent 1600, so thats 10 pounds less gear you can hold depending on your rack limits. It is also longer than the Ascent 1600 so if you have a smaller SUV you may have a problem. I put it on an '09 Kia Sportage mounted as far forward as possible and my back window hit the bottom of the box before the hatch could fully open, which was no good. The only other thing I didn't like was it's made in mexico... No disrespect I just prefer to spend my money where I make it... Thule's are made in USA... long story short I returned the sky box for a Thule Ascent 1600 and it fits the Sportage great, no issues...

Comments about Yakima SkyBox 16s Roof Box:
I travel 15-20 weekends a year for work and bought this to clear up some room in my Subaru Outback wagon. It took less than 5 minutes to put on the car by myself including adjusting the clamps. Even at highway speeds I can't hear any noise from the carrier. It is big enough to hold a lot of stuff and I haven't seen any change in my gas milage. I would happily recommend this to anyone.
