Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

I used to work at REI, I got these at the used gear sale, because they were "broken". Typical wealthy folks buy these because they are the most expensive and are "ultralight". May have never used poles before, so are unaware about how to finetune your adjusting mechanism. My other staff members would explain how to do it to people when they'd try and return these items. Most people just wanted them to be "hassle-free", If you just pull the lowers out and keep microadjusting the poles they will always work.

People are too lazy to figure out how to adjust their own poles. Check out your local used gear sales to find these poles for half price, due to bourgeoisie laziness.

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

I use these mainly for overnight trips, not always for day trips. These poles are light, strong, and easy to adjust. I have heard bad reviews merely because there is the claim that the locking mechanisms give out. Yet, there is a simple and effective way of preventing this event (this has happened with other trekking poles in my experience). If you pull out the poles all the way and then collapse them down to the length you want, you shouldn't have that issue anymore.

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

First off, I love these poles. So I was very disappointed when my locking mechanism failed. When I originally purchased these on sale, there were several pairs that would not lock. I had to pick through a lot to find a pair that would work. I was hoping that it was a manufacturing flaw, and that the pair I found would work. I have used them about four times, and I can no longer lock them. I will trade them out for the same pair and give them another chance, but so far, I am unimpressed with how it locks.

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

After moderate use the internal locking mechanism started giving me trouble by not properly locking. After much time I found little tricks to make the lock catch. But now the locks have completely failed and will no longer catch. Overall I do not trust this type of locking mechanism. The trekking poles are light and comfortable, but I would not recomend these.

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

I have seen some negative reviews about this product. I disagree! This is my 4th pair of trekking poles and by far my favorite. They are SO light and easy to adjust. They also don't make that annoying metallic 'clanking' noise metal poles do. Much more pleasant for yourself and others in nature. I don't use my trekking poles 100% of the time; these are so lightweight I can strap them to my day/night pack and not even notice the weight. Couldn't be happier!

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

I was lucky enough to pick these up on sale at my local REI, so price was key, but I've really enjoyed these pole thus far.

Lightest and strongest poles I've used - The carbon fiber construction is unbeatable and solid.

I have little experience with carbon fiber, and generally stick with metals, but the weight and shock absorption of these poles blow away any aluminum pole with anti-shock capabilities.

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

I broke 2 pair of Peak UL while hiking the PCT this summer. The grips on the handles came unglued on the first pair in the desert after 3 days. The second pair snapped in the cold High Sierras (I was barely leaning on them). REI swapped me to Leki Thermolights, and they worked great the balance of the trip.
              * Locking mechanism very difficult to get it to lock. Very annoying if you want to change length of poles frequently.
              * Poles are delicate and not suitable for heavy duty use (and I only weigh 150#).

Comments about REI Peak UL Trekking Poles - Pair:

I wanted to comment about Duo Locks. I love my Duo Lock poles, but they are tricky to use---trickier than I think they should be for the amount of instructions included with them. They will consistently lock every time if you first extend the sections all the way out to the stopping point. Then in the extended position twist the top section till you just feel a bit of drag. Stop there and twist the bottom section till you feel a bit of drag. Untwist as little as you can and move the bottom section to the position you want, then twist it till it's tight. Then do the same with the top section. When you stop for a breather give each pole a quick twist to be sure they are still snug. If you forget and one gives out it doesn't give out suddenly, sending you on your face. It slides together slowly when you put weight on it. Check them before you start downhill. Usually if they loosen it's because the baskets are brushing the walking surface, like when on snow. Otherwise they tend to stay tight for a long time. Wish they were easier, but I wouldn't trade them either. They are keepers! I was also told to wipe them with my bandana before putting them away and I think that is good advice. Don't pass on quality light weight poles because of the locks. Light weight is great!

swapped my older pair out under warranty for the newest version of the Peak UL carbon trekking poles. the new model has a plastic top of grip cap which rubs the inside of my thumbs causing blisters. the older model was a 100% foam grip which didn't rub. the new version appears to have an intermittent rattle in them too.

Despite the two reviews stating problems with the locking mechanisms, I bought a pair and tried them out on a short three-day/two-night backpacking trip in the High Sierras. I'm sad to report that on Day 2, I couldn't get the upper lock to lock. I found tricks to get it to engage when I was on the trail, but I fear these tricks will stop working...just like they did to another reviewer. I want to return these,[...]
