Comments about Guyot Designs TapGuard:
My wife and I both use these at work where the water out of the fountain is less than stellar to say the least. Using these improves the taste a great deal and makes you feel a little better about the shotty quality of certain cities water.
The only negative is that the charcoal filter will sometimes fall out if you leave the unit without water for an extended period of time.

I love the tapguard! I grew up in the country and prefer well water, but that's hard to get in the city. I use this every day at work when I refill my nalgene. I hate the taste of the water at work and the tapguard makes it bearable to drink it again. I'm also looking forward to using this when I go camping and hoping that it gets rid of the metal taste I often experience at camp grounds.

Comments about Guyot Designs TapGuard:
I used this for a short time at work as an alternative to drinking straight from the tap. It takes a little getting used to since you have to literally suck the water through the filter. I'm used to that with things like a hydration pack, but from a 1L bottle, it was strange to make that association.
You only get 100L per filter, so if you drink 2-3 liters per day, that's a new filter about every 1-1.5 months. That's a little bit of a chore. Some people have complained about carbon bits leaking from the filter and that might just mean that you need a new filter. If you are used to larger filter pitchers that can go for 2-3 months without a new filter, then you might be at risk for using the filter for too long and having it break open and putting those bits in your water.
The biggest con is that it is pretty heavy, especially once the filter bag gets some water in it, so if you move it around, it's going to fall into your bottle and you're going to have to fish it out. I put it in my messenger bag side bottle pouch and if I walk more than 100 feet or so, it's down there. If stairs are involved, forget it. So if you only plan on using it at your desk or around your home, it's OK... anything more vigorous than that, forget it.
There are other bottles with mounted filters that are better for moving around and those filters last a little longer. This is a good product, but other bottle manufacturers have caught up already and surpassed it, especially for the relatively high price point on this little fella.

I bought this and really wanted to like it. I used it for about 2 weeks before the charcoal pack that you insert busted open and I got a mouthful. I used it on a Nalgene bottle and filled the bottle with regular tap water. There is not much water flow to the spout you drink from. I liked the idea of not throwing so many plastic bottles away but I dont think this thing works filtering water, you mind as well drink it from the tap. The charcoal packet is the only "filter" and mine burst open after only two weeks. The charcoal also gets out of the packet (before it burst) and my water was gritty. Dont waste your money. Good concept bad design

This product is made to fit into water bottles with a mouth about the size of a Nalgene bottles (absolutely no bigger). It works well to filter water and take out the chlorine taste. I took it on a canoeing trip and it worked well (note I did not drink river water I filled up up before I left for the day). However the filtering out of the chorine taste may be the only positive to this product. Firstly it has a tendency to slip out of the mouth opening and fall into the bottle where it is hard to retrieve without tipping the bottle upside down - not a good thing to do with liquid in the bottle mind you. It tends to only do this when the water level is low or you drop it/shake it. Secondly the hole that allows air in while you are drinking also lets water flow out while the bottle is tipped - which, unless careful, can lead to you being soaked. And saving the worst thing for last - the carbon filters are poorly made and will get a hole in them. The filter appears to be made of some sort of plastic which is melted together to close it and will burst if agitated too much, so be prepared to fix the hole that could emerge, get a mouth full of carbon, or don't buy this product. I would not recommend this to my friends.

I think this is the first ever product I've returned to REI. It's just flawed design. I had to try a few different bottles before finding a good fit. Even with the good fit, it sometimes slips down into the bottle. The water comes out at a very very slow rate. Sometimes it leaks a drop or two around the circumference. If you are not careful, you can get water flowing out through the bigger hole and that is not filtered. Definitely would not recommend this.

This worked well for a couple of fill ups. The carbon does remove bad flavor. However, it takes a while to fill up without taking the insert out of the bottle. Also if you drop the water bottle more than a couple of times, the insert falls into the water which was frustrating. Finally, after about 15-20 uses, the carbon filter started leaking carbon grit into the water which made it pretty much useless.

Received this little gem the other day. Followed the directions and started drinking tap water with no taste!
Setup was simple enough and reading the directions is optional. Just make sure you rinse the filter packet before using or you will get some grit like some of the other reviewers. If you read the instructions it tells you to do that.
So far after about 40 liters and not having to buy bottled water I am pleased with the system. The tap water in my office is very hard and has a chlorine taste. Using the TapGuard system improves the taste or rather removes the old taste and leaves almost no taste.
Excellent product.

I got this because I travel a lot and can't stand the chlorinated pool-flavored water that one usually gets from hotel or city water taps, and I also wish to avoid buying bottled water and the associated issues with bottled water.
While the filter works (the water definitely tastes better), there are some problems with the device for me. I'm using a camelbak bottle, and the insert leaks air around the seal to the bottle; so if you try to drink quickly, you wind up sucking in as much air as you do water.
The insert also interferes with the bottle lid and prevents me from completely tightening it all the way down, but luckily the soft silicone material it is made of seems to have prevented leaks while the bottle is closed.
Lastly, if you have a completely full bottle, the hole in the insert that allows air to get in as you drink conveniently allows large amounts of water to pour out onto your face and down your shirt if you aren't careful and aware of exactly how full your bottle is. That might be a nice "cool off" surprise if you're hot during a hike, but if you're dressed for work - not so great!

when it works, it works really well, but i found that the little bags were prone to bursting, leaving me with a mouthful of carbon. i also found that the weight of the filter would pull it out of the mouth of the nalgene bottle, leaving me to fish around in the bottle to get the filter back up to the neck. this happened frequently enough that i stopped using iti'd liked to have returned it, but felt that it wasnt right to return an item that was food related, so its been binned and i'm out [$]not one of my better REI purchasesi was suprised as most of guyot designs items are so well designed
