    Comments about Smith Skullcandy Twin-Tip LINK Audio Kit:

    I like my Smith Skullcandy twin-tip LINK upgrade. Which I purchased 12/29/08.

    Things to note:
    The upgrade ear covers are identical to my 2008 Variant Brim except for the added wire that is completely hidden inside the helmet and the input port which is behind one of the ear flaps.
    The MP3 player tip on the wired dongle is 3.5mm. The standard cellphone tip on the dongle is 2.5mm. This is not mentioned in the docs from what I can tell. The included adapters in the box DO NOT fit my Blackberry Storm which has a 3.5mm (4 ring) headphone/wired handsfree port. It won't fit an Iphone either! However, Verizon sells a short adapter cable for ~$5 that converts the Blackberry Storm's 3.5mm to 2.5mm. I'm sure Apple has a similar converter for the Iphone. The Verizon/Blackberry adapter seems to work flawlessly. The handsfree functions of the Twin-tip upgrade along with the Blackberry adapter cable work similar to how they work on my old Jabra(mono)wired handsfree except the phone's output is in both headphones (mono). The button picks up incomming calls as expected. However, this does not work like a Bluetooth in that you hear the phone ring in the helmet. You have to hear your phone's own ringtone, then use the dongle button to answer. This is how my Jabra works as well.

    The instructions included witht he Twin-tip suggest to setup my phone to auto-answer incomming calls. This will simplify the process of answering calls. I agree with this but my new Blackberry does not have this function. Auto-answer from a Blackberry Storm will only work from a magnetic holster.

    In addition to the Storm, I use this upgrade with my Ipod Shuffle. The music is plenty loud and clear from my Shuffle. The frequency response is on par with an average $30 pair of on-ear headphones. Music with my Storm is in stereo and clear, as well. However, I've noticed that the volume is somewhat low when playing music from my Storm's media player even when the Storm's volume is at max and the dongle volume control is at max. Calls on the Storm are clear and loud enough while standing next to a running snow canon. Although, I did have to put my hand over the mic and my mouth so my caller could me and not the blast of the cannon.

    When receiving a call and playing music at the same time, I have to mute my Ipod manually. Otherwise, you hear both your caller and the music you are playing. As a work-around I keep my Ipod Shuffle clipped to my jacket next to the mic/volume control dongle so this is not an issue but might be for a different MP3 player. I just hit the dongle button to pick up the call then I hit the pause on the Shuffle.

    As a test, I tried swapping the Storm onto the MP3/Ipod tip and its volume was still low. So, it seems, the issue is with the output of my Storm and NOT the Skullcandy upgrade. If the phone volume gets to be an issue perhaps I add a cheap inline battery powered amp to the cell phone tip.

          This does not include an adapter for the Blackberry Pearl. I then used it with a Juke and found the microphone works very poorly. On the positive side, the ear pieces fit the Smith Variant very nicely.
