Comments about Novara Transfer Bike - 2009:
This bike met all my expectations. It is a great commuter bike. I love the seven speed internal shifter. It is simple and easy— one knob does all the shifting, and you can shift when stopped or moving. There is a numbered dial which is great when you are shifting while stopped at a four way flashing red light and about to start a big hill on the other side. It comes with the common denominator accessories— really sturdy rear rack, generator powered headlight, rear light, rear, front and wheel reflectors, fenders, kickstand, even a bell which is tiny, activates with a flick of the finger, and is neatly built into the left brake lever assembly, and works and sounds great: ting, ting, not brrring, brrrring. I have ridden the bike almost daily for weeks and it rides great. I have taken it to my most trusted bike repair shop, and to a friend who is an engineer and bike expert and they can't find anything wrong with it. I can't either. Okay, if you want really high gears so you can go wildly fast down steep hills, it doesn't have that. The seat doesn't have a quick release for quick seat height adjustment. You can't turn the headlight generator off in the daytime. The manual is a generic multi-model Navaro manual rather than singularly model specific. You really have to nitpick to find come up with negatives for this bike. I love it. It's five stars all the way.

This bike is beautiful and has nearly everything you could want. Wish it had disc brakes, but the one with those costs $200 -300 more.
Only one thing I would suggest is to have REI replace the part that holds the handlebars with one that is adjustable; the one that comes stock is a one piece & for $30 you can get a hinged one that allows you to raise the handlebars -- stock riding position was was a little too forward for 5'8" woman rider.
One interesting thing that is not documented anywhere is that the taillight comes on automatically when it is dark and when there is bicycle motion.

Comments about Novara Transfer Bike - 2009:
I have ~10,000 miles (daily commuting + errands) on my 2006 Transfer and I love it. I paid [$]and had to add the hub generator and better headlight later, so at the current price its a GREAT deal. imho a commuter needs a chain case, a kick stand (just throw away the stock one and get a Swiss or German 2 leg stand), and a higher stem; but you can add all that and this is still a great bike at a great price. Its heavy and slow but that is fine by me considering how comfortable and dependable it is.

I picked up this bike from local REI store this weekend and I've put about 20 miles on it. It has great compenents for the money spent. This will be my commuter bike as I only ride around town to run arrands. The internal gears shift flawlessly but wish there were more gear/speed for uphill climbs. Love the little hidden bike bell. This bike has it all from pannier rack to generator headlamp to rear blinky. I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants to start commuting around town. Wish it came with 700C wheels and tires.
