Comments about The North Face Metropolis Down Parka - Women's:
I was debating between this jacket and a similar one from another store (I don't think I can say the name here but this store is supposedly known for down jackets). I decided to go with this one because I liked the ink blue color and I admit that I am a snob about name brands. To me, fashion rates a bit higher than function. I do really like how the jacket looks, but it is not very warm. I live in Wisconsin and it gets pretty cold here. It is nice to have a long jacket to keep my thighs and butt warm, but I have to wear another fleece jacket underneath it (usually over a sweater) to be warm enough on top. Thankfully it is big enough to fit a few layers underneath (I tend to be a big medium in North Face stuff so I was worried about this. It is a good size, but the arms are a bit long - not obnoxiously long though). The competitor's jacket would have been a smarter buy because it was less expensive and warmer (700 fill, supposedly with warmer down) but I'm ok with this purchase since it was partly a Christmas gift anyway. Although I do like how it's not one of those really big puffy down jackets (also, it's fitted nicely), I wish North Face would make a warmer version of this jacket or a long liner for it. The other one I was considering is warmer and still thin. It's kind of lame to have to wear another coat underneath but the pro of that is I can wear it earlier and later in the season as well, I suppose. Would I recommend it? If you live somewhere a bit warmer than Wisconsin and you have a coupon [$], then maybe. If warmth is your main focus and you don't mind black, brown, or white only, check out somewhere else.

Overall this is a great jacket - I was pleased with the color selections and overall look. I live in Chicago, and we've been experiencing extremely cold conditions already this winter, and this jacket has held it's own very well. It gets a little drafty on very windy days, but overall is VERY warm without feeling too hot. I personally get cold very easily and consider myself a bit of a cold-whimp, and I can't say that I've felt cold in this coat, even on a day when the windchill factor was -20. I'm completely serious - I took the dog for a quick outdoor walk, and the only places that were cold were my lower legs and face (i.e. not covered by the coat.).
The only fit issue I have with this jacket is in the hips. I don't have particularly large hips, per se, but I've definitely got a bit of a curvy build. The jacket fits a little snug right at the hips, giving it a little bit of a pucker just at my thighs...so from the side, it's not such a flattering look, especially if I've got things (keys, gloves) in the pockets.
The other issue is that the feathers tend to shed out of the shell. I think the shell perhaps is a little thin. It doesn't shed much, but enough that it's noticeable.

I love this jacket. I was tied of the lower half of my body being cold at the horse barn, so I purchased this jacket this year. What a difference! I love it! Doesn't matter that it's long since I don't ride my horse in a winter jacket, but rest assured, when I am done riding, I will be warm when I put it back on!

I just picked my jacket up at the store yesterday and I already wore it today! It's 40 degrees today and I was plenty warm wearing it to work! I know it's not extreme conditions yet, but I think it should work pretty well. I wanted a jacket that was not too bulky, however still very warm, and I think this jacket will just just that. I love the color and the style- it has nice shape to it and it looks nice. The ONLY thing I'm a little worried about is that it won't be warm enough in the Minnesota frigid cold temperatures. It's only 600 down and it feels a little light weight. I'll just have to see!

I like the coat - it is cute and sporty. I do have a couple of problems with the outer fabric ... I wore my new coat to my kid's soccer game - well it rained and I was a little disappointed with the water-resistance. I let it air dry and while it didn't seem wet the next day, I smelled like a wet duck for a week!
Also, feathers seem to 'escape' from time to time, and since it is a dark color it is noticeable.
I do like the coat - but I have had other down coats that have not had the problems with the feathers and with the smell long after getting damp. I also read in a different review that it ran a little small in the hips and I would agree.
I would probably buy it again but probably just because of the name, not necessarily the quality on this one.
