Comments about Natrapel Picaridin Insect Repellent - 3.5 fl. oz.:
I used this spray while travelling in Costa Rica. Wanted an alternative to Deet did not want to subject myself to such a product. Talking to a sales person in the store he suggested Natrapel. It really worked well. My Husband is usually eaten up where ever we go. He did not get very many bites throughout the entire trip. The only problem we had was the spray function broke and had to pour and wipe the product towards the end of the bottle. This will not stop us from picking up more to use for the upcoming camping season.

Comments about Natrapel Picaridin Insect Repellent - 3.5 fl. oz.:
I would have given this product a 3.5 rating if that was an option... I rounded it up as it does work.
We have used this product for several years now with good results until the most recent trip that was cut short because of this product not working well at all on the specific mosquito specie we encountered. Our planned 6 night trip ended up being 2 and we had to leave on the 3rd day after being eaten up. We had bites immediately after application at times :( .
We don't notice any excessive smell with this product as others have mentioned, but it is slightly oily. It does require frequent application and I believe the 8 hour claim is not accurate at all.
Bottom line for me: I'll still use the product, but will bring a deet product with me as a backup if this one doesn't seem to work on the flying devils of the area we're in. And of course you should treat clothing with a pyrethrin product too.
Excellent product when it works... BRING BACKUP!

Comments about Natrapel Picaridin Insect Repellent - 3.5 fl. oz.:
On a recent trip to Zambia I wanted an alternative to the harsh DEET and found research that supported picaridin as a good alternative, and I brought a bottle of Natralpel.
Natrapel worked very well on the more aggressive sub-saharan mosquitoes. It also worked well on other crawlies, like biting ants. While spending 7 days in the African bush for mission work in a small village, I had only a few mosquito bites.
After returning from Zambia I used another picaridin brand for a trip to my brothers in rural Southern Maryland and it worked well there too.
The only con is that if there is the slightest breeze, the pump spray land on others near by who may not want bug spray.
Having been diagnosed with advanced Lyme disease last year, I will certainly use insect repellant more than I have in the past, and Natrapel is now my repellant of choice.

I read all the opinions and talked to a couple of folks, and met a few that didn't like it or felt it was ineffective... Gave it a try anyway and it worked GREAT for me/us. I'm wondering if certain body chemistries enhance or impede it's performance. I also wore an Ex Officio Bug Bandana and did not get a bite all weekend up in the Sierras. My son was too busy to put some on and got eaten up at first. After I made him put some on, no more bites..
I think it's GREAT and will be carrying it from now on.

I'm based in Luanda, Angola. Natrapel works great here to keep the mosquitoes and other bugs from biting you. It won't remove paint or melt plastic like deet will. I spray it on any exposed skin before using the bbq at night. The bugs will still land on you but they fly or jump off instantly. It will last 6 to 8 hours depending on how thick you spray it on. I also use the wipes to help get any missed areas. Specially when the mosquitoes are bad during the rainy season.

We spent three weeks camping out in the backcountry in Alaska in June, and the mosquitoes there are unlike any I'd encountered in the lower 48. Along the Yukon they'd swarm us head to toe. We tried ALL the mosquito repellents out there. The Natrapel with 20% Picaridin worked as good as the DEET with the added benefit of not damaging our gear. It's all I take to Alaska now.

Comments about Natrapel Picaridin Insect Repellent - 3.5 fl. oz.:
I sprayed Natrapel on the outside of my socks, a moderate amount over thick hiking socks, and my skin broke into a red itchy rash about two hours later. I washed it off and applied topical anti inflammatory and it went away.
This stuff is nastier than strong DEET sprays. The problem with 'natural' is that it often means 'untested'.

Comments about Natrapel Picaridin Insect Repellent - 3.5 fl. oz.:
I bought the product to use both at home and on hikes. I live in a remote part of the Dominican Republic where Dengue is always a risk (Dengue is a virus similar to Malaria that is transmitted by mosquito bites but common only in the Caribbean and Central America). Although it doesn't prevent the transmission of Dengue, it has been very effective in repelling the mosquitoes that carry it. I switched to this product to protect myself from the harmful effects of deet. I've used it daily for over a year and am very satisfied with the results.

I used this product in the Amazon Rain forest for 2 weeks and never had to resort to the DEET containing product I had along as a backup. This worked great! I didn't have to worry that my plastic items would melt or that I'd get it in my mouth/eyes, etc. It didn't feel nasty on my skin.
A couple of other travelers were also using this product with the same results, so I know it wasn't because I just wasn't tasty to the bugs. Also, I neglected to apply one time which confirmed just how well it was working!

Comments about Natrapel Picaridin Insect Repellent - 3.5 fl. oz.:
We went camping this week and decided to try natrapel as a deet alternative. Bad choice. The product was used as directed but seemed to attract mosquitoes rather than repel ( I have over 100 bites!). In addition to its in ineffectiveness it has a strong unpleasant odor and is oily. Save yourself the trouble.
