Comments about Merrell Chameleon Hex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I purchased these about 5 months ago to use as daily wear about town and light hiking on trails. I generally wore them about 4 days a week. The rands and toes began separating after about 3 months. The foot base became very relaxed/nonsupportive as the shoe got age on them, overly so. I had to replace the foot beds in them twice in the time I owned them as well.
I found this performance extremely shocking especially after my previous good experiences with Merrell boots. I will try another Merrell hiker but not a light weight Chameleon.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon Hex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
These are the most comfortable shoes I've owned. I purchased these in July 08 and have worn them as my everyday shoe. I even take them to the gym and use them as a jogging shoe. They are great even for the MN winters. My only minor complaint is that the sole is starting to separate at the toe but some shoe goo should take care of that. I would purchase another pair in a heartbeat. The best, most comfortable shoe I've owned.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon Hex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
Picked these up after my old Merrells wore out. I absolutely adored the old pair, super comfortable. These on the other hand weren't as special. They are easy to get on, and you can walk around in them fairly comfortable. If I even lightly jog they go crazy uncomfortable and unstable. I would also never hike in these, as they offer no stability or protection for your feet. They are light and breath exceptionally well. Don't GET THEM WET! They will not dry. I walked in rain one day, and it took 2-4 days for them to dry sitting out. Anyway, I don't really think they are worth the price. Go with another pair of solid merrells in my opinion.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon Hex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I have had 3 previous Merrill Chameleon shoes in the past. They were a perfect balance between light weight, durability and stability. The fit was perfect, with adequate toe room and the heel cup held me firmly in the shoe. They were not suitable for heavy running or loaded back packing, but were great for fast trail hiking and short summits. The built in gaitor is pretty effective at keeping out the pebbles. I like the bungee lacing concept, as it allows for foot expansion during longer hikes, and also makes entry and exit of the shoe easy. The wear was acceptable for a shoe of this type. There is a tendency for the toe rubber to separate from the leather over time.
Now on to the new Hex shoe. I had high hopes for this one initially, but discovered right away upon trying on the shoe that it was a different animal to the beloved previous designs. First, the last used to make the foot shape come out correctly was different to the older shoes. It was narrower, with less toe room, and had a vertical toe cup that didn't grab my heel. In the store, when testing the shoe for fit, it was immediately very foreign feeling with no toe room and no heel cup. I was walking out of the shoe. I purchased them anyway because of the good points of the design. (gaitor, light weight, attractive, stretchy laces, and the Merrill reputation. After break in for 2 weeks the sole softened enough that I was not walking out of the shoes, despite the lack of a proper heel cup. I still long for the old last that provided some room for my toes to breathe. Another aggravation is the gaitor is trimmed too short at the front, so every time you put the shoe on, the gaitor tucks under the laces. Grrrrr. Also the loop that is sewn onto the heal to help put on the shoe is useless due to its sizing for children's fingers! (I wear size 14 shoes and don't have children's sized fingers! The execution of details can make or break a good concept, and Merrill has lost sight of a really good one. I hope they can stick with it and get it right again, as I want to buy more if they are at least as good as the older Chameleons. Please bring back the old last that was shaped like an actual foot!

Comments about Merrell Chameleon Hex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I've had these shoes for close to a year. They are light & comfortable, breath well & look good too.
Compared to some more serious Merrell's or other hikers, these are better suited for normal hiking & walking.
I'm a serious hiker / mt. climber who puts in 15-25 miles a week in many conditions (except wet).
They don't lace real tight around the akle & I put Sorbathane arch insoles for better support & cushion.
The sole has worn well for mainly dirt & some pavement, decent traction, fairly good on rocks. Laces need to be double knotted, as they are the silly nylon round kind that might last forever, but slip.
Overall this shoe seems a good medium duty hiker & nice casual wear shoe too.
