    Comments about Brooks Cascadia 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I've found some pros and cons with this shoe. I have about 150 miles on them and have run in a variety of trail conditions from well groomed trails to technical single track. Trail runs ranging from 5-18 miles. I'll be running in them during a November trail marathon in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Pros: Very comfortable. I run with Superfeet, which makes them even better. Has a running shoe feel. The Ballistic Rock Shield provides great protection when running on rocks or tree roots. This shoe has a very aggressive tread pattern that helps secure footing uphill/downhill. They feel light and nimble. They provide a low-profile chassis which keeps your foot steady and prevents rolling.

Cons: Not really designed for rugged conditions. The toe box is not protected like more traditional trail shoes. Upper support and tongue padding needs improvement. I had to replace the laces that came with the shoe because they slipped too much. Re-tightening was required after every few miles. I found some waterproof laces at REI that I can tighten and keep my foot secure inside the shoe. The material used on the outside of the shoe is a little too delicate for a trail shoe. Rocks, sticks and tripping over my own feet have created some abrasions in the material.

This could be an outstanding trail shoe if Brooks would make a few modifications to make it a bit more robust.

      Comments about Brooks Cascadia 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

This is an outstanding shoe if you are looking for a medium-width cushioned trail shoe for a neutral gait. I have run in the last 3 versions of this shoe and IMO this is the best. I run mostly in Colorado's Front Range, from the foothills to the high country, 1-7 hours, easy to highly technical trails. This shoe has been great for all of these.

FIT: I cannot wear narrower brands of shoe but I can wear this in perfect comfort. My feet are roughly C width.

GAIT: I land on my outer midfoot, and this shoe handles it perfectly. It is not a motion control shoe, however it does have enough width/firmness at the ankle to prevent rolling. In several years of running on technical trails I've only rolled sideways a couple of times, and even then there was no injury.

TRACTION: The traction is excellent on dirt/rock/mud/snow, and pretty good on wet rock. Version 3 of this shoe has the best tread/grip yet.

VENTILATION: The shoes are well ventilated, and I can often feel the air coming into the shoe while running.

Be sure to keep them clean, especially if you run in sandy, rocky dust. I clean them with a damp cloth every 2-3 runs when the trails are dusty. If you let the dust settle into the fabric and harden, it can cause wear of the fabric (that probably applies to any fabric upper).

      Comments about Brooks Cascadia 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I just finished a half marathon trail run in these and I am pretty happy with the shoes. Great traction in mud and good cushioning. I use superfeet with them, so I can't comment on the support without them, but they held up fine for me. I've ran with them on the road to get to the trails and I don't like the feel. I know they are trail running shoes, but sometimes you have to run on the road to get to the trail :-). Stay on the trails and your feet will be happy. The weight is good too. I'd like to wear these shoes all day.

        Comments about Brooks Cascadia 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

In light of Todd in Detroit's unfavorable comments about heel construction, let me add to my review since for me the heel is actually a plus:

First, for your comparison I'm just under 150 lbs.

Second, I don't land on my heel (I strike mid-foot, a sort of modified Pose Method), so I actually want a heel with a slight bit of give so my foot can land how I choose, not how the heel determines. The firmness of the heel is perfect for me.

Third, I run on rough trails with plenty of vertical (1,000 - 8,000 ft), including up and down CO high peaks on uneven rocks, boulders, talus, dirt, etc. and I never experience pain due to pounding caused by lack of padding in the sole, nor does my foot roll due to softness or lack of stability.

Fourth, I've never run an ultra, so I can't comment on how this would work while sleep-running 100 miles through the Colorado night in the high country :). My longest mountain runs so far top out at just over marathon distance, and these shoes have been comfortable.

          Comments about Brooks Cascadia 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I really tried to make these shoes work as a medium- to long-distance trail runner. After three trail runs (55 miles), it's apparent that they aren't going to work. I had hoped to use these at this years Leadville 100 race.

The biggest problem is the apparent lack of heel cushioning for the heel strike. After my run, both my heels are sore for day.

The shoes are stable on non-technical, flat surfaces. However, on rocky terrain, the heel is quick to twist even after tightening the laces a little past the comfort point.

I've been running trail ultras for many years and haven't experienced these issues with my mainstay, Montrails, which I had purchased at REI.

            Comments about Brooks Cascadia 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I run between 40-60 miles a week, half of which is on trails. I've been training for a 50-miler and doing 20-35 mile trail runs on a mixture of dirt single track, grass and some road. I've worn the Cascadia on all surfaces, and they've performed well. Breathable insoles have holes in the bottom for venting. I haven't tested them on really rough conditions, but to me, they provide support for tough terrain with the comfort feel of a road shoe.

            Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was as expected, 2-3 business days. Product arrived in new condition.

I used the online chat customer service, and she was extremely helpful in explaining the return policy.
