Comments about Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Mini:
great fire steel for camping or survival kit. it does have a coating on it, but it doesnt really affect the use of this product. some people say its too flimsy or breaks really easy, but the material the rod is made of isn't made to be abused. not much force is needed to create sparks if your using the right side of the scraper. if your wondering this isn't really 'steel' its a material called ferrocium rod which is similar to flint, but the scraper is made of steel.

Perhaps matches are still the better way to go. You can carry 100 small matches at 1 ounce and they have a flame - not just sparks. Matches ignite and you just need to spread the fire. Sparks, may or may not catch the tinder on fire, depending on the intensity of the sparks and the quality of tinder, whereas you can just hold a match under some tinder until it lights up. For tinder, I use dryer lint mixed with peteroleum jelly. That has worked really well so far and lights up once a flame touches it. A fire steel takes around 5-10 strikes to ignite it.
This fire steel sends out sparks (no question there) but I think that matches are still the way to go.

'bought this as a backup after the piezo on my stove wouldn't fire on a rainy morning. Nothings scarier than cold oatmeal. This little guy packs up tight and fires right up.

I've had this item for a year or two now and use it whenever I need to make fire or just light my stove. In my opinion it works great with practice and the right tender bundle.

Great tool.. I never use a lighter when outdoors. This baby throws a big hot spark.. Add some lint from your dryer and you've got a great survival tool. The more you use it the better you get at it. So you're not left stranded trying to figure out how to use it.

This thing does what it suppose to. The key is preparing a good tinder. This never failed on me. I've never used it in wet weather (I have stormproof matches for that), only mild wind of 15mph or so. Always caught fire right away.

Comments about Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Mini:
My review refers to the newest model of the the Light My Fire Mini, which doesn't have the jagged-edge striker; it has the straight-sided striker. This thing makes fireflies jealous! I get a great shower of sparks with just one strike. The first thing - the VERY FIRST THING - you MUST do before using this is to scrape all of the black protective coating off. When the firesteel rod is bright shiny silver, then it will work. What I've found to be the best method is to hold the striker flat against the rod and pull the rod away from the striker. Make sure you have the correct side of the striker facing upwards - that is, the side that says "Up" should be facing upwards. Works every time!

Comments about Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Mini:
I got this firesteel with the Djo Survival knife. I had never used one before and after reading comments like "it lights dryer lint instantly" got a little frustrated. I don't come across to monay dryers much less dryer lint while in the woods camping. Be sure that if you have never used this that you do not try it out before you rely on it. You have to use proper tender in order to get this to work I used dry grass and it work. I had to bundle it in a soft bundle about eight inches in diameter. It looked similar to a bird nest. then I had to blow on it until the embers turned to a flame. That is how it worked for me. I am buying another because the one that came with the knife did break after striking on it for about six hours.
