REI Members get back an estimated 10% on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Rated1out of5byfromLooks anf feels like a little kids toy.It seems like the rod itself is no bigger than a tooth pick. This is something a little kid would use. Save your money.

Rated5out of5byfromGreatWorks great (durability seems fine for me: but only had for a few weeks and a multiple dozen strikes, not quite a hundred yet). I keep it on my car keychain which is always with me. Makes very hot sparks very easily. I can start a cotton ball, lint or sawdust on fire with one try repeatably, and works great to light my canister stove instead of using matches.

Rated4out of5byfromLightweight, FunctionalI keep this with me as an emergency fire starter along with a baggie of dryer lint, but I've also used it to start my camp stove on backpacking trips. It generates enough sparks that it usually only takes one stroke to get the burner going. Unlike lighters it doesn't run out of fuel, and if it gets wet you can just wipe it off. It does take some getting used to how to use the striker, but once learned it is pretty easy. I also worry about losing it in my bag or having it break if something gets smashed against it. I usually keep it in the container with my stove to try to keep it from breaking. Overall the water resistant, reusable, lightweight fire starter is preferable to packing a lighter or matches since it rarely fails to work.

Rated1out of5byfromnot worth itThis is easy to use and lightweight. It worked once on a camping trip when I tested it, but while backpacking on Isle Royale and using it for the second time the rod split right out of the plastic cap.

Rated5out of5byfromSimple and Compactgreat fire steel for camping or survival kit. it does have a coating on it, but it doesnt really affect the use of this product. some people say its too flimsy or breaks really easy, but the material the rod is made of isn't made to be abused. not much force is needed to create sparks if your using the right side of the scraper. if your wondering this isn't really 'steel' its a material called ferrocium rod which is similar to flint, but the scraper is made of steel.
