Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

I just picked this pack up on 1/9/09 and put it to the test this weekend with a 12 mile run. I've run with a number of different hydration packs over the years and this one passed the test. I was looking for something lightweight without a lot of bulk. The straps fit snug and are very comfortable. They don't chafe and they breathe well. I don't like straps running across my diaphragm while I run, so I kept the lower strap very loose across my stomach and the shoulder straps were still secure enough to keep the pack from bouncing too much. Some packs I've run with kept me tugging and re-adjusting throughout my runs...which is annoying. The Stroke 9 did a good job of staying put.

If you are a minimalist, this is a great pack. I wouldn't expect that you can jam a bunch of stuff into this pack, but if you needed to carry a rain shell, snacks, gloves, hat and gels, you would be just fine.

The small pockets on the sides of the pack are good to carry gels, but are hard to reach. Unless you are a skilled contortionist, you'll need to remove the pack to access most items you are carrying. The small zipped pocket on the top of the pack is ideal for holding an iPod.

I used a 100oz Camelback bladder, which I only filled with about 30-40oz's. I will say that inserting the bladder into the pack reservoir and tethering it through the straps was a bit cumbersome. Not that it was difficult, it just took a little more effort than usual.

If I had one improvement recommendation, it would be to consider adding a small pocket or two on the belly strap or on the front of the shoulder strap so that a gel or a bar can be easily accessed.

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

I bought this bag to use on day hikes and it has performed better than expected. I really just needed a bag, and the price was right. I have to say after using all summer in parks across the country, Ive gotten my moneys worth.

Its a really really great bag, VERY comfortable and adjustable, and more roomy than I expected. In fact its more roomy than it looks wearing it as well. The padding on the back is nice and quite comfortable. The egg crate pattern keeps your back drier than it would be with a lesser pack. I really cant say enough about how comfortable this pack is for me. Once its fit to your torso you don't notice its even there.

Room enough for ... rain gear (or a fleece), maps, 70oz hydration pack, trail food for two, a small med kit of my own making put in a red rei ditty bag, water filter, UV water treatment, compass, two knives, emergency stuff (whistle, bear spray, etc...) and still has room for camera, phone, keys, wallet and a book. And that's not using the webbing side pouches or strapping anything on the outside.

REI did a great job with this bag and as durable as it is I'm sure Ill be using it for years.

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

REI's advertising forgot a couple of things on this one. First off, I have a 3.0 liter Camelbak (100oz.). I bought this online and was hoping it would accommodate. Thankfully it did, with no room to spare, but it fits. Also, I like the whistle built into the chest strap. It's a great "why not" feature. Other than that, this thing is exactly what I was hoping for. My primary use will be day hikes, and mountain biking. Great pack and definitely the best bang for the buck!!!

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

I recently move to the Pacific Northwest and was looking for a pack that would let me pack some rain gear and hydration without feeling heavy and tight. My typical trail mileage is about 4-8 miles for short/recovery runs and 10-15 for longer runs. I used to use a camelback lumbar pack, but it didn't have any space. With the ability for the sky to open up here, I needed something light and small that could pack a lot more. This totally fit the bill. You barely notice it's there. I even ran to work with my scrubs, stethescope, and underwear in it. Totally worth the money. REI nailed it with this pack. The only down side is that I had to set the shoulder straps a little looser to keep the waist strap at my waist. It didn't feel too loose though. The whistle is a nice addition too. This is well thought out design.

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

I just took my new Stoke 9 out on a two mile fast hike to get the feel for it and get it adjusted. The pack is comfortable and well thought out; and, as advertised, is designed for the minimalist, trail runner, or dayhiker just interested in taking a few items.

The main compartment is adequate for a spare water bottle (if the hydration sleeve is not enough for your trip), small lunch and snacks, map, roll-up windbreaker, leatherman tool, and the like. There is a seperate exterior pocket that holds my cell phone and small digital camera perfectly.

The waist strap could be a little bit longer. I have a 34 inch waist and theres not much room to spare once I buckle the strap. By the time I finished my 2 miler my back was a little damp from sweat. The temps were moderate and I'm curious to see how it performs once summer gets here.

My initial impressions of the Stoke 9 is its a great little lightweight pack, and as long as folks keep it to the essentials, they'll be well served by it.

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

Wanted a pack to carry wallet, keys, water, etc. on a 3-mile run from office to home. Have taken this pack out on a couple practice runs to get a feel for it. I think it will be perfect for my running commute. Even with a full 2L bladder, there's plenty of room for my small essentials, it's not too heavy, and the waist and chest straps keep the load from jostling while I run.

I'm 5'4" with medium build. My partner is 6'0" and somewhat heavier, and the pack is not as good a fit for her. The chest strap in particular seems too tight. Not sure if she'll return hers...she hasn't done a trial run yet.

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

I ended up going with the REI Jet UL pack, since it has more room.

If I didn't have to carry extra water and supplies for my dog though, this pack would have been great (with the exception of the sternum/chest strap. Not ideal for anyone over an A cup).

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

This pack is PERFECT for an urban bike outing. Biking in a city requires carrying around an outrageously heavy NYC-style bike lock. This pack fits the 10lb chain lock easily, and the breathable egg-crate padding means you don't even know it is there. For a night out on the bicycle, the pack easily held the big chain lock, another U-lock, a bottle of wine (a must for the urban cyclist), wallet, phone, keys, and a couple of reflective windbreakers. Best of all, its narrow profile means it does not bind your shoulders or arms at all and permits comfortable riding even in a fully bent over race position. Excellent pack.

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

This daypack is wonderful. It is small, but it holds more than you might think. I don't do a lot of mountain hiking, but as a US Navy wife I move and travel OFTEN and spend a lot of time outdoors. Currently stationed in Japan, I walk and take public transportation everywhere, so I usually need to carry more than a purse on a daily basis. This daypack is perfect. I just returned from a 9-day trip to Seoul, South Korea, and this daypack went with me everywhere, including the DMZ. It held my passport, wallet, mini first aid kit, digital camera, travel size umbrella, travel guide book, pen, tissues (in the front zipper pocket), and EITHER my REI ultra lightweight rain jacket (in its pouch) OR a small water bottle (but not both). All this was without a water bladder inserted in the back water bladder zippered compartment. Of course, if you are in the city, then you can get water anywhere.

The front panel has a typical bungee cord that could hold a lightweight jacket or a ball cap, and there is a small loop at the bottom of the pack that would hold a small caribiner for maybe a water bottle or something lightweight. The two mesh pockets on either side of the pack are very small and will not hold a water bottle, but they will hold a small digital camera (mine fit perfectly), an MP3 player, or a pocket size umbrella, or a small flashlight, or a granola bar, or a pocket knife.

I intend to use this daypack on all my tours in Japan, and on future international trips. Our next move is back to Hawaii, and I am sure this daypack will be with me daily, whether on trips to the grocery store or hiking up Diamond Head. This daypack does not replace my larger backpack that I use for traveling, but it is great to take along for day trips and adventures (it lays flat in a small suitcase, so you can take it with you on your travels). I highly recommend it!

Comments about REI Stoke 9 Pack:

This is a good pack, but it's a little large for me. I'm 5'3, 100 pounds, and this pack does not tighten adequately for my size. I think maybe I should have gotten a kid's size pack. The shoulders on this one are just loose. Anyhow, I like to take this on runs to the store and back, or for trail runs. When I go to the store, this will hold my wallet, my phone, and a few small items, such as fruit or whatever I buy that's smaller than about 6" across. It's a thin (front to back depth) pack. Overall, I am pleased.
