The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle:
I bought this thinking it was a pea-less whistle, to use in very cold conditions so the cold wouldn't cause the pea to freeze from the moisture in my breath. BUT IT IS NOT PEA-LESS. Nowhere in the description does it say it has a pea, and you can't tell from the pictures that the whistle has a "belly" on the bottom for the pea. Other than that, it is a very loud whistle. BUT it takes a lot of effort to blow it hard enough to get max voulume from it. A negative if a person is injured and can't blow it hard. I have a WIND STORM Safety Whistle (Has a Pea) that is just as loud, but it takes a lot less blowing effort to be as loud. Thet is why I only gave the REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle 3 stars. However, the REI Tri-Power Whistle, being 3-toned, could be more audible/noticeable in certain conditions, and it is a bit smaller/flatter than the WIND STORM, which could make it easier to pack in a limited space. I'll keep on looking/listening for a loud, compact, easy-to-blow pea-less whistle. I will recommend the REI Tri-Power Whistle, but with the caution about the blowing effort.

Comments about REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle:
My immediate impression on blowing this whistle is that there is something wrong with it. I fear that it would be difficult to blow it, full strength, when the person is (floating) in very cold water - as compared to other plastic emergency whistles. My first puff on it was not very hard; almost no sound came out. Then blowing as hard as I could on it (while plugging my ears), it seemed to be losing some of the air-flow through the two additional passages of its "tri-tone" design. I think the noise was not as loud as a plastic "storm whistle" I had owned. I'm guessing about it being difficult to blow when the person is very cold, but given this experience and the strange design of various plastic ridges on the underside, which could interfere with a tight seal of the lips, I cannot trust it for a kayaking-capsize emergency in cold conditions.
Plus factors? It's small, compact, light weight, has a nice little clip. Maybe ok for hiking. I recommend plugging your ears to blow any of these whistles - which is why it's important to be able to hold a whistle with your teeth and lips, not needing to steady it with the hands in trying for a better result. Designers: please go back and review your initial requirements of what a whistle should accomplish and under what conditions. Something as basic as a whilstle should not have to generate this much commentary about its potential failings.

Comments about REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle:
This thing is AMAZING. It does it's job and it's a small price to pay for your safety.
I do a lot of solo hikes and/or hikes in the backcountry. I purchased a few of these whistles and have them on every backpack of mine and keep one in my car. I don't feel as if I go as deep to need a personal GPS locator, but this is the next best thing.
The gentleman at the REI store told me not to blow it around others. The first thing I did when I got at the car was try to get it as loud as can go, and both my sister and I still have permanent hearing damage. Listen to the man.
I have never had to use this in an emergency situation, but I would trust it to work. I keep it attached to the chest strap of my Camelbak, and I do not go out of my way to treat my pack kindly. I have thrown this around quite a bit and it has yet to crack or break in a year.
This is also an excellent tool to use to discourage wildlife approach. I have only used it on cows (they ran for the hills as fast as could be) and a deer, but if I encountered something like a cougar or bear, this would be sure to scare them or hurt their ears in some way.
Safety is priceless.

Comments about REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle:
Extremely loud whistle that (despite being plastic) feels solidly built and reliable. I'm no whistle coinsurer, but these core features make it a great asset when hiking in the backcountry.
It clips to a D-ring at the front of the backpack for quick access and it's bright color makes it easier to find (unless you're hiking Mars).
Must have given the price and potential safety benefits.

This as loud a whistle as I've ever heard. It is truly brutally loud. Construction is rugged, I can't imagine it breaking under normal use.

this is a great whistle, it will deafen your ears with sound. Just to save a little weight, I took the metal clip off and tied parachute cord on it.

Comments about REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle:
Two concerns for a survival whistle-- durability and volume. Passes both. Appears well-made (can't say all that much here), and this thing is the loudest whistle I have ever heard. With only a bit of effort you can produce ear-splitting whistles.
Bought it for doing bird surveys by foot in rugged terrain, and it adds a degree of comfort I didn't have before.
