    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

    REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle - Orangeis rated3.6out of5by5.
Rated4out of5byfromGood WhistleI got this mainly to meet the free shipping minimum, but had been thinking about getting something like this anyway to take on outings. I was impressed with the compact design, it will fit a pocket well. Looks like it is made of quality materials.

Rated5out of5byfromSimple, EffectiveI carry this thing on a key chain that I dummy-cord off on a belt loop. Very useful in getting someone's attention when signaling. Cost to benefit, there isn't a better signal tool you can get for this price.

Rated5out of5byfromPowerful emergency whistleThis is a robust emergency whistle, as load as it can get. I use it every time I sail, to prevent collisions with other vessels if they don't see me (e.g. behind their foresail). Could be used for other watersports or hiking, if you need to get other's attention. This whistle is a bit larger than you would image based on the picture, a definite plus if you need to find it in your bag. Some people say it needs to much air for someone fallen into icy water: well, it is true. You might want to get an openwater lifevest for those situations, one with a light beacon.

Rated3out of5byfromREI Tri-Power Safety WhistleI bought this thinking it was a pea-less whistle, to use in very cold conditions so the cold wouldn't cause the pea to freeze from the moisture in my breath. BUT IT IS NOT PEA-LESS. Nowhere in the description does it say it has a pea, and you can't tell from the pictures that the whistle has a "belly" on the bottom for the pea. Other than that, it is a very loud whistle. BUT it takes a lot of effort to blow it hard enough to get max voulume from it. A negative if a person is injured and can't blow it hard. I have a WIND STORM Safety Whistle (Has a Pea) that is just as loud, but it takes a lot less blowing effort to be as loud. Thet is why I only gave the REI Tri-Power Safety Whistle 3 stars. However, the REI Tri-Power Whistle, being 3-toned, could be more audible/noticeable in certain conditions, and it is a bit smaller/flatter than the WIND STORM, which could make it easier to pack in a limited space. I'll keep on looking/listening for a loud, compact, easy-to-blow pea-less whistle. I will recommend the REI Tri-Power Whistle, but with the caution about the blowing effort.

Rated1out of5byfromCaution If You'll Be In Cold WaterMy immediate impression on blowing this whistle is that there is something wrong with it. I fear that it would be difficult to blow it, full strength, when the person is (floating) in very cold water - as compared to other plastic emergency whistles. My first puff on it was not very hard; almost no sound came out. Then blowing as hard as I could on it (while plugging my ears), it seemed to be losing some of the air-flow through the two additional passages of its "tri-tone" design. I think the noise was not as loud as a plastic "storm whistle" I had owned. I'm guessing about it being difficult to blow when the person is very cold, but given this experience and the strange design of various plastic ridges on the underside, which could interfere with a tight seal of the lips, I cannot trust it for a kayaking-capsize emergency in cold conditions. Plus factors? It's small, compact, light weight, has a nice little clip. Maybe ok for hiking. I recommend plugging your ears to blow any of these whistles - which is why it's important to be able to hold a whistle with your teeth and lips, not needing to steady it with the hands in trying for a better result. Designers: please go back and review your initial requirements of what a whistle should accomplish and under what conditions. Something as basic as a whilstle should not have to generate this much commentary about its potential failings.
