Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

I am a guy that is 6'4" tall and weigh 275 pounds. I had a complete knee replacement 3 months ago and used these black diamond poles to do some very steep climbing in Colorado. I was able to go up very steep inclines that were a combination of rock, dirt and mud. Never slipped once. I was on loose rocks many times and was very pleased with the performance. The grips and wrist wraps are great. The wrist wraps are very comfortable and transfer the load in a comfortable manner. I am also 54 years old and wish I would have found these years ago. Never did they slip when tightened even when coming down hill and all my weight was on them. Best I have used. The other type of securing the shaft, twist type, slipped on me and I almost fell. I would recommend these to anyone. I plan on taking them elk hunting with me this year. No more knee pain!!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

I had never tried trekking poles before. But after watching some old feller using a pair to float down the rock pile that is King's Peak last year, I decided to give them a try. I enjoy hiking and backpacking tremendously, however I'm getting older and get pretty beat after about 8 miles uphill with a 40lb pack. I bought them shortly after completing a 30 mile trip in the Uintas. I took nearly the same route 2 weeks later with the trekking poles and I can't believe the difference. My legs were fresher and I covered more ground quicker. Granted, I worked up a pretty good sweat using these because you're shifting the load to your arms and shoulders, but I was amazed. I will never go backpacking without these again.

These poles were lightweight, easy to adjust and took a pretty good beating on a variety of terrain. It rained most of the trip so the ground was also muddy and slippery. The poles gave me added stability going up and down hills. I can't imagine how miserable it would have been without them. I'm a convert for sure.

Very happy with these poles. Well worth the money. Great value.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

I wasn't sure about poles, they always kind of seemed like unnecessary... Until my mom bought a pair of these and I borrowed them.

I found that these increase my range by a lot, as they give my hands something to do which kept them from hanging down and having blood rush to the fingers.

They keep me upright with good posture for longer, therefor shifting weight off of my lower back, allowing my arms to help in the balancing.

In addition, they greatly increase your safety and confidence going up areas where falling would probably result in injury or death.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

Being a rather large person (6'6", 276 pounds), I'm always concerned about the stability of trekking poles and the holding mechanism. The locks on these poles just DON'T SLIP.... going downhill with a 25 lb pack and me really using the poles to stabilize myself, and they didn't slip a bit.

The grips are very comfortable, and the poles themselves are very lightweight.... A better birthday present I couldn't have asked for better!

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

I've owned other trekking poles before and they were flimsy and ended up bending on me. I'm 6' 2" and 220 lbs. I back pack in the winter in the Sawtooth's with a 55 lb pack on my back. Now that's 270 lbs of weight put on these poles on my decents. They have a nice shock absorber built in which makes it very nice. I'd reccomend these poles to anyone. They are deffinately worth the extra cost. Don't settle on those less expensive models. You will be glad you did.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

Black Diamond is known for it's excellency, and these trekking poles are no exception. With comfortable grips and straps, easy adjustment and just the right amount of shock absorption, these things help me fly over long ridge hikes and up and down the Southeast sixers. Everything you've heard about the security of the FlickLock is true; absolutely no slipping, regardless of weight and force. Utterly fantastic performance.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

This is my first pair of trekking poles, recommended to me from an experienced hiker and friend.

First things first, I won't be hiking without poles probably ever again. The list of benefits is just too long. From balance issues, to stream crossings, to less stress on joints and even just plain old having your legs get less tired, they are a must.

What do I like about this product? I like that I can put my full packed weight on it at a lean and it doesn't compress (I weigh 195lbs). The grips fit my hand well and are comfortable as well.

What could be a bit better? I do wish that they went just slightly longer as I am quite tall and also prefer them long in general.

First I had hard time to adjust locking system.
Key point is loosened screw, adjust length then lock it. Again tighten screw and it works fine.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

My girlfriend and I decided to "relive" the experience of hiking the Grand Canyon from 18 years ago. Of course, being older, wiser, and having more money, we needed more gear. My husbanded insisted I needed hiking poles; my friend thought I was being a little over the top when I bought them. Let's leave it by saying we split them and she had one and I had one. Next time she will certainly buy her own...I will never do a long hike again without these things. It may be obvious to people who hike all the time, but if you're a novice and are carrying a pack, make sure you have someone show you how to strap these puppies onto your pack. A big thank you to the manager at the Northville REI store, as I never would have figured it out. They were easy to adjust and I could adjust them without ever having to play with the mule poo that comes with hiking the trails there. My drawback issue was my hands were a little sensitive and eventually I had to use a bandana over my hand to keep it from blistering. So maybe some gloves next time?My husband will be getting a pair for his birthday (and his surprise is that he is going to become a hiker!)Anyway, the poles were the icing on the "gear" cake as far as I was concerned. (Well, that camelback thing was pretty cool too...)

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles - Pair:

I'd like something lighter, but putting my neurosis on shedding grams aside... these poles are great. I'm 6ft 230, and I don't ease up on these at all, sometimes they are the only thing touching the ground, and they've yet to fail on me other than some slight bends in the thin section at the bottom. Although, I do feel like for the way I use them I'm pushing them close to their limit, and would like to see the exact same setup of the shock absorber and grip, but in a heavier duty elliptical design like the Spire.

I've tried a couple different brands and styles of poles, and as far as the current technology goes, the Flicklock seems to be the most reliable mechanism for adjusting size.

I hope someday, somebody, will create an adjustment mechanism that can be triggered/set on the fly. It just gets annoying to constantly feel like you need to adjust your poles, and sometimes dangerous when you try to do so while moving.
