For your reference, this page contains historical product information.

Our saucy Novara Aspen hardtail bike features Shimano components, Kalloy alloy handlebar and stem, Alex wheels and WTB tires for a smooth ride.

  • Sturdy 6061 aluminum frame boasts enhanced standover height and fork clearance
  • RST Gila T8 suspension fork delivers 100mm of travel to smooth out the bumps and cushion landings
  • Shimano Acera front derailleur and Alivio rear derailleur offer smooth, reliable performance; responsive Alivio Rapidfire shifters deliver excellent on-the-fly shifting
  • Tektro mechanical disc brakes provide powerful off-road stopping power
  • Smooth-rollin' Alex TD24 rims reduce weight where it counts; teamed-up with WTB MotoRaptor tires, they're ready to tame the toughest singletrack
  • WTB Speed V Saddle provides a soft and comfortable ride
  • Comes equipped with platform pedals

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

I bought this bike for my wife. It's a great bike and holds up really well. It has stood up to the abuse of learning to ride singletrack. We run errands with it and even ride some distances (50+ miles) with it. Overall, I would highly recommend it. However, if I were going to get another I would swap out the brakes. The mech disc brakes are garbage and have had to be adjusted constantly. A nice set of SRAM or Avid v-brakes would be a much better choice on this bike (or bump up to a good set of hydraulic disc, but that's a lot more cash). The seat also got quickly replaced. But with those few quibbles, the bike is a great choice for those just getting started in mtn biking or commuting.

Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

i ride this bike everyday to work, a total of 11 miles a day, and it has taken a beating. I am not soft on things and have crashed twice and the bike was fine. I did have a problem with the chain, it was to long and kept popping off, but REI fixed me up and that's the only thing that was ever wrong. For the money, it's a great, durable bike, it even handles well on the trail, so if you want a bike for the road or trail, this will work for you.

Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

I ride at least 3 times a week on some sweet singletracks that range packed dirt to sand to rocks and roots. The bike has held up well, with no problems at all with contruction or performance. It's a solid bike! Take REI's advice when they say you need to get it serviced after the first couple of months. I had to have the back wheel immediately replaced as some strange noise was coming from the free spinning hub. The bargain basement Tektro discs are exactly what you pay for, and seem to need adjusting a lot. I'm Looking for an upgrade on those. The WTB tires stick like glue at the right tire pressure, and the saddle is comfortable. Most other components are entry level. But hey everything can be upgraded. Solid frame. For the price, anybody looking for an entry level hardtail couldn't do better than the Aspen.

    Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

This bike is used for a 14 mile round-trip daily ride to work. Although the tires are not necessarily suited for road work, it gets the job done. That can be a quick fix though. I also ride this bike on light trail. It has held up quite well. It was purchased about 2 months ago and has been used about 4 times per week. I have read some reviews about the brakes and there could be some improvements made on future editions. Even with that said, they have never failed nor have I had to make any adjustments. The gears have shifted smoothly every time. If I had to go buy another bike today, I would gladly buy this one again.

    Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

The bike as a whole is a fantastic bike. The chain slipped off a couple of times after owning the bike in the first week, but with readjusting the tension it was fine. The front derailer had to be adjusted after a few weeks of riding. Putting semi-slicks on it was probably my best investment so far. It can take a beating and keep going. Definitely a good buy.

        Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

I did a lot of research before buying the Novara Aspen, and rode many of the comparable bikes at REI. The Novara Aspen was the best value, and being a beginner to mountain biking, I could not really tell a difference between this bike and the more expensive Novara hard-tail bikes offered. I use this bike daily to commute as well as a trail rider at least 3 times a week. This bike has held up well and I have not encountered a problem yet. I am very happy with my decision to get the Aspen and I would recommend it to anybody wanting a rugged commuter bike or the weekend warriors who want to just get out and ride!

Ive had this bike out on the trails a few times this year. i enjoy using this bike becauseof its great ride and brakes. although i have only had it out a few times i already needed to have it tuned up which kind of [*]. the problem was whenever i would pedal hard up a hill the chain would slip. but that is the only bad thing i have with the bike.

I bought this bike from a friend after he had put some good use into it. I just put it into the [...] shop to get the warranty tune-up, but was very impressed by the handling and the ruggedness of the bike. It is not flashy but handles extremely well. It is rough on the butt, but it is a hardtail, so that is to be expected! Overall, GREAT bike for the price i scooped it up for!

          Comments about Novara Aspen Bike:

very good bike. lasts a long time and very reliable. The parts are great for someone who has been riding for a while. I use it for casual riding and small jumps. Only thing I could find that could be improved was that the weight was a little heavy for hill climbing but otherwise a fantastic bike.
