Good basic traction

Moved to Salt Lake City and decided to get some snow traction for winter hiking. Picked up the cheapest YakTrax at the local REI and went on a hike to Sundial Peak the next day. Trax were great on the snowpacked and steady elevation increase trail on a beautiful January day (lost less energy sliding back in the snow). Easy to put on (front and back labeled on trax) but one came off while hiking (luckily a hiker coming up behind us saw it and grabbed it for me), so I would spring for the slightly nicer model with the strap that goes over the foot next time (making a makeshift one for these in the meantime).

Durability Issue

I had a pair of these four or five years ago that lasted 3 winters of hiking on icy mountain trails. I would estimate I put approximately 125 hard miles on that pair before one of the rubber straps snapped because it had been cut by a compressed metal coil. Bought another pair last winter and, today, the third time I had worn them, again one of the coils compressed and cut the rubber strap on the bottom. Upon comparing them with an older set my wife has, I discovered that the rubber Yaxtrax is now using on this model appears to be thinner and softer than what they were using a few years back. That would explain why my first pair lasted so long and this pair didn't. I'll be returning them to REI.

Very disappointed in a product with a good name

I purchased these to help with snow shoveling of all things. A simple task for someone who's a Rock Climber, avid Camper and Backpacker, and is always pursuing an active lifestyle. After the second day of use, I looked down at them before I strapped them on to a pair of La Sportiva boots and noticed one of the rubber bands had already broke. I'm all for giving a company who stands behind a product a second chance, but in this instance I will find another product to fit my needs. Even under the worst possible circumstance this should be durable enough to tolerate two uses. This goes beyond poor design and just shows the quality of the materials used to be total junk.

Performed well... Until they broke

Took a pair of Walkers out on a leg of the Teton Crest Trail this weekend, and they were great in providing traction over the snow, especially on the second day once it had frozen over in places. UNFORTUNATELY, one of the rubber straps snapped after only 6 miles of walking -- I had to walk through an additional 8 miles of snow and ice with only one Walker, which is unacceptable in tough conditions. Really disappointed with the quality. Will be looking for a more durable solution from another manufacturer.

Saved me from breaking my bones

I use these for my daily run, when the roads are icy or hard-packed with snow and ice. They work the best on hard-packed snow and help to keep me from breaking bones on black ice. These aren't crampons, so don't expect perfect traction on ice. I've put about 25 to 30 running miles on my pair with a few springs wearing through and breaking. I try to rotate which side gets used as patches of bare pavement tend to wear the springs, eventually causing them to fail. The rubber components are living, as I am careful to make sure that the rubber straps run between the lugs on my running shoes. This is especially important in the heel area, as the heel strike zone is a high wear area on my running shoes. Bottom line is that I would rather run with these outside in the snow and ice than be tortured by the tedium of the treadmill inside. They are not perfect, but in my experience, you get what you pay for. Are there better products out there... sure, but not at this price. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a pair.

So Glad I Gave These A Try

I used these on a trek to some alpine lakes yesterday, and they were outstanding! They turned what could have been a slippery and potentially dangerous trail into an easy, confident hike. The grip and stability they provided were exceptional, making icy and uneven terrain a breeze to navigate. Highly recommend for anyone tackling winter trails!

Size information was off

I bought these awhile back and just now have a need for them. I don't know about durability yet, but the size recommended for my shoe size was too small. I bought the size recommended by REI size chart I found after much searching in the Q and A section of this website. I'm a women's size 10. According to the size chart, this would be at the upper limit of a size small, which is what I bought. After quite a bit of pulling, I was able to get them on my shoes, but it is a really tight fit. I could not get them on my boots. A size medium is needed if you're a size 10 women's .

Great item!

I got this item as a gift after constantly slipping on ice in a pair of boots whose sole I wore down to nothing. The Yaktrax were perfect! I can now wear my favorite boots in icy/snowy conditions without worrying about slipping every other step! As they're easy to put on/take off, I also use them on my snow boots and wear them around the mountain after snowboarding/snowshoeing. Unfortunately, I cannot put them on my running shoes because they are too bulky and would definitely throw off my stride and cause an injury. The model I own, however, are made specifically for walking. Yaktrax supposedly sells running grips similar to these, but I haven't been able to find them and cannot comment on their effectiveness.

No more slipping!

I bought a pair for my husband and myself. My husband thought that I was being overly cautious and was not interested in them. We live on a hill and our driveway is slanted so when we got freezing rain he was salting the drive and taking very cautious steps and sliding, I suggested he just try the yaktrax -he did and now he's completely sold! He salted the entire drive and was able to walk all around with 0 slipping. He is now recommending them to friends. I also bought myself a pair and had the same experience on a driveway that was covered in ice - 0 slipping.

Waste of money

After using the yak tracks twice, they were useless! I would recommend a better quality traction device from a different company.
