Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

I use these for my daily run, when the roads are icy or hard-packed with snow and ice. They work the best on hard-packed snow and help to keep me from breaking bones on black ice.

These aren't crampons, so don't expect perfect traction on ice. I've put about 25 to 30 running miles on my pair with a few springs wearing through and breaking. I try to rotate which side gets used as patches of bare pavement tend to wear the springs, eventually causing them to fail.

The rubber components are living, as I am careful to make sure that the rubber straps run between the lugs on my running shoes. This is especially important in the heel area, as the heel strike zone is a high wear area on my running shoes.

Bottom line is that I would rather run with these outside in the snow and ice than be tortured by the tedium of the treadmill inside. They are not perfect, but in my experience, you get what you pay for. Are there better products out there... sure, but not at this price.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself a pair.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

Don't be fooled by the cheap price in comparison with other products. It ain't cheap when the straps break first time out. These did not work for me at all. Attempted a morning hike down a snow-packed Bright Angel trail and thought I was prepared with these. Both straps across the toes broke within a 100 yards of going down. Purchased and tried a second pair (thinking I had a 'defective' pair)---they broke in same place as well. I didn't have a loaded backpack either time.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

Walking on snow and ice on Spokane's South hill every day. Freya actually, the *steep* part. I choose to do my commuting on foot and the bus.

Very good traction. Slipping is minor and short in duration.

Very, very, treacherous on any flat surface like tile.

One of the rubber bands on the front has broken twice in less than three months of use.

I would not recommend these to a friend who does a lot of walking, I have recommended them to friends for use between the house and the car.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

Many of our neighbors own them now, we use them for walking the dogs and getting up/down the hills, they are great for the casual walkers and those 50+ who do not want to fall. They are lightweight so they are easy to grab and throw in the car or bag when traveling which I did last year when I went to NYC. They give some traction on ice which is better than nothing.

My Yaktrax are on their 3rd year and the neighbors find they replace them about every 2 years. I do not wear them on anything but snow or ice.

I use these for running on ice or trails with hard packed snow. I just slip them on over my regular running shoes, and I am fearless! The yellow color is nice for nighttime visibility. They do fall off of my hiking boots on snowier trails; you need something to hold them on like the velcro of the yak trax pro.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

I used YakTrax as a "commuter" aid on a variety of city terrain and conditions. I tried the product on sneakers, dress shoes, hiking boots, and rubber rain boots.

I walked up and down a city sidewalk (elevation gain of 30' over a distance of 50') to the bus and in town (level). The conditions during the walks were on compact snow and ice, black ice, slush (treated snow and ice), and "bare and wet." The temperature ranged from 25 to 35 fahrenheit.

This product is a large rubber band with metal springs at intervals to make two diamond tread pattterns over your forefoot and heel. Care is required not to shoot the YakTrak across the room (or the road) off your toebox. Several adjustments were needed to tweak the springs off the sides of the footwear and onto the sole and heel. The toe and forefoot were worse than the heel. I found that on a textured sole that the rubber spars (lateral members of the framework) could rest in the grooves and provided a better "fit and feel" than on a non-textured sole.

Adjustment was often needed during walks in all conditions. Often the YakTrak went missing if not attended to. Best on compact snow, then ice, then "bare and wet," then slush. DANGEROUS on wet nonporous surfaces like tile and linoleum.

If you just need to have a little traction when installing your tire chains, or walking to the recycle bin from the house, wait until the YakTraks go on clearance for half the retail price.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

I use my Yaktrax on Colorado Front-Range trails all winter, and on the big peaks in late spring to early summer where there's still ice or packed snow on the trails. 2 years and still going strong. I think their durability depends alot on how you treat them, what boots they are used on, etc. Easier to carry than crampons (and alot cheaper) although not meant to replace crampons on hard ice. Definitely beats slippage that occurs without any traction device.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

Got these primary to use when shoveling snow off my driveway as it's on a hill and tends to ice up, though I did also wear them some when walking my dog. They work as advertised and definitely improve traction in snow and ice and make standing/walking much easier.
The reason for such a low review is the quality. I went through 2 pairs in one winter, both of them breaking after a few weeks of use. I had also gotten a pair for my Dad at the same time I got mine and his also broke within a month. The problem is that they are made entirely of rubber, which while makes them easy to put on and somewhat universal in size, does not help to make them durable. On both pairs I had, as well as those of my Dad, the rubber developed cracks and then completely broke along the bottom where the metal "spikes" are. Seems like the wear from the metal and the ground is too much for the rubber. Perhaps if the bottoms were plastic instead of rubber they would last much longer. Very disappointing considering they do work well while they last.

Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:

I bought this product because the snow covered sidewalks had patches of ice. This product is great so you don't slip when there is snow and ice combined. This product will give you that added support.

However, this product is NOT meant for pure ice. Recently in Madison, we had 5 inches of slush that turned to ice. It was like an ice rink on the sidewalk. Even with the Yaktarx, it did not help. Buy rubber shoes in that case.

As far as comfort, it is a bit hard on the knees when there is nothing for it to cling to. It is true to size.

great product. must be worn correctly or will come off in deep snow. My only concern is possibility of breakage where straps cross at mid sole and are not protected by coiled wire. Have worn for six hours, heavy hiking and no problem.
