Comments about Shimano Alivio RM410 Rear Derailleur:

I am not an expert by any means. I can only comment from my experience. This derailleur came with the bike I purchased in 2008. I have used it for daily commuting since then. I estimate over 20,000 miles on this bike. The Shimano Alivio derailleur is still functional.
I cannot speak to precise shifting because I have not maintained the bike as I ought to have, and I cannot speak to whether or not it increases pedalling efficiency or whether or not it is easy to install. But as far as installation goes, it's bound to be easy. The trick is properly adjusting a derailleur once it's installed.
As for "Best Uses" - I expect it would work fine for any cycling you do. But I don't "road" bike, and I don't "mountain" bike. I commute.

Comments about Shimano Alivio RM410 Rear Derailleur:

I'm not a bike expert by any means, so there may be very justifiable criticisms and I have nothing else to compare it to. This came with the Giant Transend I bought when gas prices spiked to $4/gal in late 2008. I have been using this bike for daily commuting since 2010. I estimate over 20,000 miles on this bike. The derailleur is still working.

Comments about Shimano Alivio RM410 Rear Derailleur:

I'm a year-round bike commuter in Chicago and have done a couple extended, self-supported tours. This came on my Trek 7.2FX which I modified for extended riding by adding a rear rack and changing to drop handlebars.

The derailleur is nothing special - basic 8-speed piece, but mine has lasted 7000 miles (1/3 of that being loaded touring) through the past 3 years with no problems at all. I've had to make a couple minor adjustments when I remove/install a cassette or as the cable stretches, but that is it.

Really, it's only worth getting a higher-end component if you want to get into racing because the extra cost isn't worth the extra functionality for your average Joe. I do love my 105's (my 2nd bike is a pretty bike), but low-end Shimano/SRAM/et al components can really take a beating for how much advertisements emphasize upgrading.
