Comments about REI Arete 2 Footprint:
Good six point coffin shape to fit under the Arete 2 tent. Comes in a mesh bag with instructions right on the bag. Six straps with nylon glove hooks allow the footprint to be clipped to the tent. It is light enough that it can be left hooked to the tent and rolled right up together as a unit. Then you have a nice mesh bag for other uses.
However, instructions need clarification.
Step 1 says "Lay out the footprint, coated side up." How do you tell which is the "coated side?"
Two phone calls to customer service finally answered the question.
In the first call I was told that the "shiny side" should be up. After looking at the footprint I found that both sides are shiny.
So another call to customer service was made. This time I told them that one shiny side was "slick feeling" and the other was "tacky feeling," plus it had the maker's tags on that side and the edges were sewn under on that side. The answer from customer service is that the "slick side" goes up and the "tacky side" goes down.
Taking a cue from "Camping For Dummies" I would suggest that the footprint be stenciled with "THIS SIDE UP" on the side that should be up. It sure would save on phone calls.
Service and delivery comments:
As a retired Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Engineer, who was trained as an Industrial Engineer, I always have a tendency to look at making instructions and products better and easier for others to use.
Customer Service has really been great in solving the questions that I had. They are the ones that suggested I review this product for the feedback to the company and to prevent other users from having the same questions.

Comments about REI Arete 2 Footprint:
aside from the instructions issue mentioned in the other review, there's really nothing to complain about. Just take note that the apparently the tag/stitching side goes down and the rest will take care of its self. Great fit and performs the task at hand for minimal addition to the overall load. In fact, I would consider using it as a wrap/layer in an ultralight/emergency scenario. In the past, I've often recycled old packaging for tarp layers. This does just as good and is much more compressible.
