Comments about Open Country 700 Watt Dehydrator:
I bought this dehydrator to make my own backpacking meals. I used it mainly to dehydrate ground beef which worked tremendously. [...] (I didn't even know they sold dehydrators) If you are looking for a way to get away from those tired old prepackaged backpackers meals, making your own is the way to go! You can seriously dehydrate anything in this dehydrator!

Comments about Open Country 700 Watt Dehydrator:
I bought this dehydrator about two years ago as it seemed like a decent machine - especially for the price. Overall, I was pretty happy with it but would only recommend it if you plan on using occasionally and for small amounts of food. It definitely does the job, but i found that once I added more trays (to the 3 that it comes with), the drying took quite long. Even with just the two trays, certain food items required that I turn them over, mix them up, etc.. It turned into a job that I had to be busy with instead of just turning it on and coming back 6 hours later to remove the food. Now, two years later, it stopped dehydrating altogether, as the dehydrator does not get hot anymore!!
All in all, I would recommend this only if you are looking to save money and do not mind being busy with the dehydrating process. If you are ok with that, this machine will be perfect for you.

Comments about Open Country 700 Watt Dehydrator:
I finally got a chance to use my dehydrator and test out the results on a recent backpacking trip. This dehydrator does a good job of dehydrating pre-made meals for backpacking. I made spaghetti with Italian sausage and marinara sauce and it dehydrated beautifully. I also dehydrated garlic mashed potatoes and some mangoes. If you are interested in cookbooks I recommend the Backpack Gourmet. But one serious con is that only one fruit roll up tray is included with this item. Also REI does not sell extra trays, clean a screens or fruit roll up liners. I had to buy them separately online. But a decent deal on sale or with a [$] off coupon.

I've used it with fresh and frozen fruits and veggies. Made jerky. It's not hard at all. [...]
