Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

This was the first "big" knife that i bought. It works great. With a little bit of time on a whetstone and it was sharp enough to shave with--even though there is no good reason to have a knife that sharp... unless you need to shave, I guess.

In all honesty it is as diverse of a knife as I can imagine a fixed blade to be. I have scaled and gutted fish, whittled spears, killed a real ticked off rattle snake, and prepared food with this knife. And after a year of solid use it is as good as new.

Sure the sheath is not the most amazing sheath of all time, though I have not had any real problems with it, but if you want a good knife, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

I wanted an all around knife which wouldn't cause a stroke if I lost it or something but would also perform the tasks I needed without breaking or falling apart. I have had positive experiences with Gerber products in the past so I bought this one which was designed for Gerber by William Harsey Jr., a well known custom knifemaker! I purchased the knife for a very reasonable price and used it to cut meat, rope, wood, gut fish, cut plastic and wire leader! It was shaving sharp out of the box and is a nice heavy duty mid sized knife! Ergonomics of the handle are great, cut all day with it without discomfort or blisters! The blade didn't dull up quickly and resharpened with ease. The sheath was ok, would have preferred a better quality leather sheath but the knife was good enough so the sheath doesn't detract from it. This knife outdid some knives I have had which cost much much more! Buy a couple of these knives and keep them handy cause they are definitely worth more than the price they are being sold at! One of the better production knives on the market today!

Now this is a real knife. It feels great in your hands, and stays sharp. It's not the lightest knife, but the weight is very well distributed. I'm all about saving weight when I backpack, but have never been happy with light weight or folding knives. When you just need a real knife that does not compromise anything, this is the knife you want.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

Just finished a week long backpacking trip in Maine's Baxter Park. Used this knife for rope/paracord cutting, wood splitting, branch cutting. Still sharp enough to slice through steak and chicken, peel potatoes, chop peppers and onions. Felt very comfortable in my hands.

Sheath is very flimsy when attached to belt or pack straps.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

I ordered the Big Rock Camp Knife from REI for camping/survival use. I used it last week while I went on a backcountry excursion and it worked well. I used it to cut branches, split 4 in. diameter "logs", preparing food, cutting rope/cord, etc. However, the best use for this was for fire starting. Using the serrations to strike a fire steel, it produced a shower of sparks that ignited dry grass, maya dust, lint, and the like. In 5 mins. I had a fire ready for cooking, boiling water, and for comfort. Using the knife for this will tarnish it, but the tarnish will wipe off. The serrations however, will get damaged. The damage will consist of the points "melting off." The serrations will still be there, the the points will be rounded and warped. But remember, this knife is for rugged use not for show, so don't be afraid to use it and beat it up.
The sheath is all right for what I paid, but its design could be better, but I will try to improve of it like others have.
All in all, this is a great knife, worth well over its retail price and dependable for years of hard use.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

I have this knife strapped on whenever I head into the backcountry. It has proved its worth over and over again, from cleaning fish and dressing game, to cutting ropes and branches to build a shelter. This is an excellent, no-frills, survival knife. Only get's four stars because of the sheath. It is floppy and likes to slide around on a belt. I was able to improve on the design by sewing on nylon straps at each end that could be adjusted in length to either wrap around the thigh or calf, or as I like to carry it, attached to my pack's shoulder strap for quick and easy deployment.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

I gave this as a gift to a friend and was surprised how tough this knife is! The handle is comfortable and grips your hand securely, and the blade is strong and thick for a knife in this price range. It may not be quite as burly as some of the high end survival knives but for the price it is fantastic.

Comments about Gerber Big Rock Serrated Knife:

I really like this knife, it really preforms great for many uses, from cutting small branches, rope or opening tough packages. It feels silly to pull it out to cut food though. Holstering it on your belt while wearing a pack feels awkward too. I really feel safer carrying a knife of this size for longer trips though, its tough, its sharp, and its a Gerber. If you needed this in a survival situation I'm sure it would preform great. It works great on a flint/magnesium block too.
