Comments about REI Duffel Bag - XXX Large:
I bought this bag for a cross country bicycle ride. It was a big bag and I could fit my tent, sleeping bag and camp equipment into one bag. For 3 weeks twice a day I would fill and empty this bag, lug it from the campsite to the truck and then out to the new site every night. It was filled with about 35lbs of stuff and it was about a mile hike each way. The zippers held up nicely, the buckles are made out of plastic and they all broke within the first week which made the sling strap useless, luckily the bags handles held. The bottom of the bag wore through in 2 different places with holes about the size of a dime. The loss of the sling strap made it difficult to manage the bag and the bike to and from the campsites, the holes in the bottom made me paranoid about the bag ripping which it never did. If the handles had a little more length then I could have used them as shoulder straps but they were too short. Overall not terrible but certainly not good or even average. I give it two stars becuase I think it would hold up well in less demanding situations. I think if its going to be light duty then this bag is a good bargain, but if its daily use for an extended period of time I'd spend the money and buy a Northface bag.

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - XXX Large:
We just moved to a new home and used the bag to transport ALL of my wife's shoes. The high heels did not rip through the Cordura and the darn thing actually carried every pair of shoes she owns - quite a lot! A little hard to carry, but understandable given the size of the bag and the nature of the load.

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - XXX Large:
These REI branded duffels are a great buy. I use them to organize outdoor gear at home, and to protect large items when traveling by air. For example, I have one in the right size to protect my expedition size backpack; skate long-board, etc.
I like the rather large aspect ratio (ie the ratio of length to width is greater than competing bags). This, combined with the full length zipper makes it very easy to access the contents.
The high volume/weight and high volume/cost ratios just can't be beat. Of course, it is possible to overload the larger versions and thus break the plastic hardware; but that's as much operator error as it was a considered design compromise on REI's part.
If the buckles were metal I would have given 5 stars. However, the cordura nylon bodies and zippers are strong and durable, and the wrap-around straps will not fail even if the shoulder strap does.
Highly recommended.

Comments about REI Duffel Bag - XXX Large:
I can't comment on the bags utility on a bike, what I can say is this is a great travel bag. My company sells clothes and we use the bags to haul our samples coast to coast. We jam the bags with 40-50 lbs of clothes and hangers and ship the bags ups or fed ex. The light weight saves on costs and the durability has been incredible. We have had 12 bags for 2 years. We ship the bags about 70-80 times a year and have never had a problem. For [$] it is a bargain. They are on sale for [$] today and at that price, it feels like stealing.
