Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

I bought this bag for a 550 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles called Aids Lifecycle 6. A weeks worth of cycling clothes (an outfit for everyday), sleeping bag, pad, toiletries, evening and casual clothes, camping gear, and room for extra things I might pick up, all needed to fit in a single piece of luggage. It was essential that it be tough too, because with 2000 plus cyclists participating in the ride, my bag was going to be handled roughly by volunteer roadies for the sake of efficiency.

I love how the top compartment has a barrier separating it from the rest of the bag, so it became a perfect spot for my dirties. There are compartments everywhere for excellent organization making it easy to quickly find the little things I need. The main compartment is quite cavernous.

The construction on this bag is top notch. I had picked up all kinds of souvenirs in the towns we road through and camped in and towards the end, it became overstuffed. The zippers are made so well, that even when overstuffed, they do not become separated.

A tip I have for anyone participating in an event like Aids Lifecycle is to choose the color I did, the Madrona red or any color besides black. This made it easy to recognize every evening when it came off the truck and then again at the airport on the way home.

This excellent bag has been my luggage choice for all my travel since.

Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

Just got back from a 13 day trip that included car camping and bicycling. The backpack straps freed up my hands to lug my bike box around the airports -- very handy. It was big enough to handle 13 days of warm weather and cold weather street clothes and bike clothes. The varous pockets made it easy to find things and the outside compartment held my dirty clothes from the clean clothes. This is an excellent bag.

Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

First of all, I love the Beast. My first use was a week long trip to Florida. I had all of the many, and very useful pouches, packed full. I love the idea of having an area to keep shoes and dirty clothes away from the rest of the other items. My only downfall was that I over-packed and thus made the bag somewhat heavy. There was enough room in the beast to pack everything I needed plus a small car. It's an awesome bag with the straps and locking devices located to keeps everything in an orderly manner. With a handle located at each end, it makes it easy to grab the bag and start your vacation. I love the Beast.

Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

I am a FEMALE Communication Team member of our county SAR and use this bag as my Comms response bag for local SAR missions as well as a 72 hour bag for longer, out of area missions. Radios with extra antennas, batteries, battery packs, refernce materials, notebooks and personal gear (including a stove, coffee cup and food, clothing, etc.).

I DO NOT backpack with this bag, except for moving between vehicles or work stations, but it is used as a seriously good gear bag and "lives" in the back of my SUV always packed. It's is easy to pull gear from it to stow in a backpack, too. All my gear is kept in netted, see thru bags that can be pulled out for easy re-packing.

Tonight I am ordering another one for my husband who is on the ATV team. It would be easy to strap on to the back of an ATV and we are considering using the new bag (before throwing on the back of an ATV) as a suitcase for our an upcoming vacation.

Fully packed, it is easy to use as a backpack for a SHORT distance, but I wouldn't go all day with it.

Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

I got this bag as a supplement to a large, wheeled suitcase for long trips. Practically speaking, you can only wheel around one piece of luggage at a time, so I wanted a big bag that I could sling over my shoulder (just to get it across the room), or carry like a pack (for longer distances). My needs were simple, and it fulfilled them beautifully, but it's so much more than a simple bag. The tremendous amount of thought that went into its design was obvious the first time I used it. The "U" shaped opening to the main compartment made it so much easier to access the inside than a standard straight zippered opening. The multiple pockets for organization are a huge boon, without compromising the utility of the interior for big, bulky stuff; now the smaller odds and ends I throw in don't get lost somewhere under everything else. The compartment at one end that lets you keep some stuff separate was extremely useful, and the fact that it "floated", so that if you didn't fill it up you weren't losing that space in the main compartment was fantastic. I could go on and on: sturdy bottom, top quality materials, flawless fit and finish, compressions straps work great, doesn't fold in half like lesser bags when you sling it on your shoulder, perfectly placed and padded grab handles, locking zippers, and to top it all off, it looks good!

This is one highly evolved duffel bag. It almost needs its own category.

Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

I love this bag! Enough pockets for all my winter knick knacks plus clothing. It's nice that the inside isn't black which can be a problem if all your gear is black. The separate shoe pocket holds two pairs of size 8 XC Ski boots with room to spare. It might even hold two pairs of size 10 boots. It's got a no frills strap system which means it's not a fancy backpack where it seems like 3/4 of the hype is in its "suspension" system. Just a good sturdy practical duffel which frees your hands for grabbing other things such as your skis/snowshoes/poles/kids/keys/waterbottle, etc.

Comments about REI Beast Duffel Bag:

I filled it up to capacity for a weeklong cold weather camping trip, and gave it to the airline baggage handlers, hoping it would arrive in one piece. No worries. Upon arrival, I lashed it to a packframe and carried it 3 miles to our camp spot. It's not an ideal backpack, but did double duty for me and took alot of abuse without a scratch.

This pack is great so far. I have only used it 5x in the past 2 months, but love the durability. I love little stash pockets, and that's just what it has. The backpack straps are key to traveling with other luggage too. - if not used, you never even know they are there!

I traveled through Italy for the summer with this bag. It is great in terms of carrying capacity but the straps are terrible. Very well made other than the straps. I began to dread putting it on and walking to the train station/ through buses/ around cities. Get it if you don't plan on carrying it long distances. It would be great for everything but long distance trekking.
