Comments about REI Wheely Beast Wheeled Duffel - 35'':
Recently took this bag on my trip from BOS to ATL. No problems checking it in one way but had problems coming back. The airline counter person claimed that the bag was over the 62" limit. The bag was packed to normal size with straps zinched in 80% of the way. The measured dimension of my bag came out to 65" (35" + 16" + 14") which is the advertised size. Also the weight came out to 45 lb which is under the 50 lb limit. The overall dimension would have been larger if we overstuffed it.
As a result, we will have to return this bag because we plan to travel quite a bit and we can not afford to have to pay airline overage fee even if it only goes over by a few inches. More then likely this was a judgement call by the airline counter person but we've heard stories of counter people getting bonus' for finding customers to charge overage fee.

When I got back from Agentina I had to throw my second Wheelybeast into the dumpster--it had a broken frame and a crushed top and handle--it looked like maybe some South American baggage handler had dropped it from about 20 feet onto concrete...but everything inside (including a birthday gift bottle of Argentinian champagne) was okay, and the bag did not burst open.
It was a sad farewell, because dependable Wheelybeast Number Two had been with me on trips to Patagonia, Easter Island, the Dolomites...and many other places. It had outlived its life expectancy, I suppose. But I will get a new one. I look forward to making friends with Wheelybeast Number Three! The design is extremely practical, and I can stuff everything I want into it, and I always recognize it on the baggage claim carousel.

I just got back from my 14-day trip to France, Italy, Greece and Croatia and this bag truly lived up to its name. It truly is a beast, but in sheep's clothing. The look is decent and material is durable, the wheels are sturdy making traveling through cobblestones, up stairs, and through subway turnstiles easy.
Opening the bag is easy and quick with its durable zippers, plus the inside is truly cavernous. However, be forewarned. You can definitely overpack and easily exceed the airline weight limit. I'd bring another bag (stuff it in this one before your trip) just in case.

This is close to a great bag, but the design flaw is that there is not enough reinforcement just above the bottom (as seen when standing on end on its wheels). In two trips, it was torn and badly abraded twice. The first time I figured just bad luck, but the second gash was over an inch long. On the same trip, I had a much cheaper, lighter bag, which was fine, because it was designed to protect from wear and tear. This bag is probably great if you're not going to fly. In any rate, it's pretty heavy for checked luggage, unless you are flying business with higher weight limits! (Easy to make it too heavy for coach, I had to watch it!)

It's narrow enough that it fits through doorways, including vehicle doors. The weight is distributed well, so it's easy to pull long distances. It's very sturdy and structured, even though it's soft-sided. I can fly without worrying when it isn't full - the compression straps keep everything where I want it, keeping items protected and the weight balanced. Perfect amount of extra pockets and adjustable space for small loose items or dirty clothes or shoes. I've flown many, many times with this bag over the last year and it's been given quite a beating, and it still isn't showing wear.

I just got this bag from REI [$] Definitely worth a lot more than that. Be careful how you pack it. Be aware that United, Delta, American, etc. limit each bag to an overall dimension of 62" (width + height + depth). Per REI's specs, the overall dimensions of this bag are 64", two inches over the limit. No stories about people being barred from checking it in though! I have had Victorinox wheeled backpacks fail way too quickly when holes were abraded completely through in the lower corners away from the wheels. I am concerned that this may be an issue with this bag too, but I am hopeful.

Great bag, TONS of space. Compression straps are fantastic if you're not fully packed.
However, durability is an issue. I use this bag 1-2 times per month for business travel, and after 3 or 4 uses, it developed a hole by the bottom 'loop' handle. It seems that the loop will fold under, towards the wheels and create a rub point right at the fabric. It then creates a hole. I recently had to return it after a trip, in which one of the wheels broke off, into the bag. Seems the plastic piece the wheels are mounted to is not a continuous, strong piece, to support the weight. Because of that, the wheels are susceptible to breaking, and the bag is also prone to tipping over when standing up (as there's no 'base' to support anything.
Good bag, once they figure out how to strengthen it.

I bought this to transport 5 months of belongings so I could live in the UK. I packed it to the gills, it weighed over 50 lbs (don't tell United!) when I got on the plane. I lifted it by its single handle multiple times onto trains, up stairs and down, and onto busses and trams. The handle held and no rips or tears anywhere. I used it not only to go to and from (twice) during that time, but to move carpets, pillows and appliances as I furnished my flat so it got a ton of (ab)use. This new model is a bit more expensive than the one I bought but the additional handles on both ends will help with the one issue which was trying to have help lifting it.

My spouse and I use this as our single piece of luggage for road trips and long weekends. It's a step up from us sharing a large, Army-issue duffel bag. The duffel was the right size but it had no access except from the top - duh. I wanted something that was basically our Army duffel-on-wheels with a front panel for loading. This is it, with extras galore. CAVEATS: measure it before you stow it - it is long and barely fit the width of our CR-V. Also - if you fill it, it can be VERY heavy - we had to pay extra baggage $$$ at SFO because I didn't weigh this thing before we left home. LOVE the top compartment for dirty clothes that fills as you go.

This is really a beast among bags, we fit all our stuff and more in this bag, it's easy to wheel around even when it has a ton of stuff in it. But when we flew out we used AirTran and they charged us an extra [$] because it was to big even though it was under their weight requirements which I think another reviewer already mentioned, when we flew back with Frontier we didn't have any problems...so it's something to keep in mind...Overall this is a truly awesome bag that fit 2 sleeping bags, 2 bed rolls, a tent, and still had room for a few more things and I didn't have to carry it all because it has wheels!
