    On the con side, this value-priced light is a little more cheaply made than the other more-expensive options [...]. The plastic seems thin and the beam color has the expected slight irregularity to it (slightly bluish in center, slightly greenish at the perimeter). The ratcheting part of the tilt mechanism is a bit stiff and the switch on mine became a little finicky within a few days of purchase (warranty issue). Holding the switch for one second to turn it on or off will help prevent accidental battery drain, but was a tad annoying in use. However, none of these things will be noticeable to you if you have not owned a premium headlamp before. It is of high enough quality to put it in the category of serious, reliable gear and easily separate it from discount-store junk. Despite these minor shortcomings, this is a very good light. At its price, it is a sound value and definitely a best-buy. I can highly recommend this headlamp. It will not have some of the (unessential) features of an expensive, bulky headlamp, but it is smaller, lighter and more comfortable to wear. As a regular headlamp user for 25 years, I can assure you that lightweight and comfort, while not that evident in the store, are the things about a headlamp you will grow to appreciate during real-world use. It gives you a very good, usable flood of light at two brightness levels (plus flash) with absolutely no flicker. Also, unlike the very smallest headlamps, this one does not use expensive, short-lived coin cell batteries, but instead uses 2 common, inexpensive, easily-found AAA batteries (including rechargeable ones) which last and last. IMO, everyone should own a headlamp and this one would be good for all but the most technically-demanding uses. My prediction: it will become a best-selling product in the low to moderate price range and drive lots of other headlamps off the shelf.

      For the price you can't go wrong! I bought this one to replace one that was the same price but not as good. I've used it on two week-long outings this year and have not had to replace the batteries and I do night hike at least a couple of times every trip. The low setting is still a little bright for reading at night so if there was a lower setting as well, this little baby would be perfect.

        For the price, how can you go wrong.

        The beam was even brighter and illuminated a larger area than my hiking partner's headlamp (which is a more pricey headlamp) and he came to rely on my lighting the way than his own headlamp.

        Nice surprise to have the 'inexpensive' be the better of the two. :)

          This light works very well with the three mode. Bright, Low, Strobe. I have had mine for about 4 months and use it often at night. About a month ago it started not turning on. You have to squeeze the sides in order for it to turn on, and then half the time it still turns right back off. I plan on returning it to hopefully get a new one under a warranty.

          Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

          The first headlamp I used had the unique ability to turn itself off whenever it wanted. At first I thought this was due to low batteries so I replaced them. Then I after it kept doing it, I replaced them again. No dice. The lamp always turned back on, but it obviously didn't work corrctly.

          I took the lamp back to REI. I had the option of getting a different brand or whatever, you all know the options. I REALLY liked this lamp so I got the same one. The new lamp has been trouble free. I have a much higher powered lamp I also carry, but this one is perfect for around camp and reading.

          Three stars based on me having to return it, otherwise I would have given it five because I do like it so much.

            This is the best headlamp ever. the battery has lasted for over a year. i have dropped this into a river and it still works. I do a lot of backpacks and hikes, this is good for seeing the trail and other people.

            this is a great product, have ownd it sice december using it every weekend, and just recently i have had some problems with the light just dieing out on me for no reason. i talked to some people about this and BD aparently uses a differnt type of soldering on there products and this may cause this to happen, still investigating tho. all in all its great for backpacking and climbing and its definaly cheap

              This is a must have piece of gear for the person who needs an inexpensive head lamp. I have gone through my fare share of them and at [$] for this little sucka I have to say it is a steal of a deal, must have piece of equipment for the overnight back pack trip, car camping, or even home use.

                I initially bought this headlamp to get my son to be quite[...]. It also served to keep him entertained while I packed up for trips and cleaned up after them. Turns out the headlamp works better than another one[$]. Its brighter, lighter, and I haven't replaced the battery yet. My wife and son fought over it the last time we were car camping but I get it for hiking.

                  I picked up 3 of these headlights for the kids as I wanted the battery efficiency of LED and something small for their heads. This has not disappointed. If left on I don't have to worry about changing out batteries. The smaller size fit's the kids heads easily and it is lightweight. Kids are 3, 4 and 6. The button is easy to work and it has a strobe feature. I use it when I go backpacking because of it's extremely light weight. It only has 3 bulbs but gives plenty of light for my needs. Lastly, you can't beat the price.
