Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

I was looking to lighten my load when I bought this pack. I had brought my gear way down but still had a 5600 cu in pack. This pack just seems to mold to my body and with the adjustable torso length you can dial it right in. Its on the small side but for a lite and efficient packer 3 day trips are no problem. Holds up great to the elements, I spent 2 days in solid rain with perfectly dry gear. Its simple but functional. My only complaint is a lack of tie points for different gear. I cant lash things to the bottom of the pack like a sleeping pad. I plan to add a couple of tabs to the bottom to remedy this.

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

This backpack is a great Ultra light pack. It has enough capacity to keep most people happy for an extended weekend. It is also a great summit pack, it is very light, moves with you well yet has enough room for voluminous items like down jackets and the like. It hits that sweet spot of big enough but not too big. I have used this backpack on weekend camping trips, toted it throughout Ecuador for a month, gone snowshoeing a dozen times, traveled extensively with it as my carry-on, and summited Ranier, Baker, Cotopaxi and Chimbarazo with this little number on my back. And really it is still in great condition.

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

I was unsure about this pack until I was caught in a rock slide down a 14er. As though that wasn't enough, I watched it as it went crashing down another 300 feet. It only had one little tiny worn hole which was easily patched. I don't care for the bungees on it though.

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

I have taken this pack on two hikes. One in the Cohutta Wilderness in GA, and the other recntly on the James Edmunds trail on Black Rock Mountain in GA. This pack is really great as long as you keep the load light, i.e. under 30 pounds or so. Beyond that weight issues arise. The pack gets heavy obviously, but you really start to feel it in the thinly padded shoulders. The shoulder straps are connected to the pack pannel which is adjustable via velcro, but if overlaoded this velcro slips and the pack sits at its lowest point rather than on the hips. Also, the back pannel does not have very good ventalation so you will sweat. It has enough room for a short weekend trip, but beyond a few days, it gets challenging to fit everything in. However, its not all bad. For all its problems overloaded, if packed correctly it is super light, very comfprtable and has a good deal of room for most items and is hydration compatable. I will keep this pack for short, light weekend trips, but will be upgrading to something bigger and more comfortable for longer trips. All in all, a good pack for the money and as long as you stay light it is terrific for weekend excursions.

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

I bought this pack as my first investment in quality hiking gear. My sons (8 and 10) and I caught the hiking bug last summer and we are hooked. I am very much a pear-shaped woman with narrow shoulders and wide hips; it was such a treat to get a back-pack which fits both! I love the side pockets for my camera. I wanted a pack I could use for a day of snowshoeing and also for a weekend in better weather and this fits the bill. I have hiked Colorado and Scotland with it - in sun and rain - and it has performed very well. Because it is adjustable, I can tweak it depending on the load. The only thing to flag is the sternum strap sits pretty high up; some adjustment to the straps on top helped improve the configuration. It has been a great buy!

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

We bought the pack to use as part of a multi-bag system for two people to travel through Greece for 10 days. When flying, we packed the pack in the bottom of a duffel bag (specs: 2,024 cu. in. 11"H x 23"W x 11"D. 1 lb. 7 oz.) that was checked baggage. When traveling, we stuffed the duffel bag at the bottom of the pack and repacked. In total, we used this pack, a medium backpack (approx 3,000 cu in), and a small day pack (specs: 10" x 7" x 13", 900 cu in).

Pros: With most packs, my back gets sore quickly; with this pack, my back was fine (in fact, I preferred to carry this pack to the regular backpack, though this one was packed heavier). The pack held up well and shows no wear and tear.

Cons: The pack is only loaded from the top. It would be nice if future models had a side zip to access items packed in the middle or bottom. The pack is only slightly larger than a carry-on size (by our estimate). Maybe consider resizing future models to meet flight carry-on size requirements?

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

I've used this pack for all that I do. The first thing I used this pack for was a flight to Miami and a cruise. After removing the stays and hipbelt, I packed all I needed for a 5 day carribean cruise and it fit in the overhead compartment on the plane ride. Since then I've used it for summer day hikes in the Sierras and Big Sur, and it snugged down for some class 4 scrambling without floppage. I also used it for an overloaded snowshoe day in Yosemite (it was my first winter outing so I didn't know what to take, so I just took it all) probably 35lbs. and felt no fatigue. It really transfers loads to the hips for trails and it snugs down tight to the back for climbing and talus hopping.

I used it on a 1 night hike recently and loaded it too the gills. I don't have the smallest of everything so, after packing my 2 person tent, 1 pound sleeping bag, z-rest pad, I had little room for extra clothes or food. Good thing I had my wife along to carry the rest.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the Cruise UL 60, for the extra room so I can do some solo weekends with the dogs. I'm not sure how well the UL 60 will smush down for dayhikes, but that'll just give me a reason to buy the Jet UL too. Plus the daisy chain, I can totally live without it, but I've always had a thing for daisy chains. They give me someplace to hang some extra carabiners so I can pretend to be Ed Viesturs. Haha

Good pack. great quality. too many pockets that do nothing but add to weight. good choice for people who don't want to go frame-less. a lot of weight is shaved when you remove the inside bladder holder and trim up the straps. i took this pack on a two week John Muir trail hike and it was great.

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

My husband and I purchased two (male and female) REI Quick UL 45 Packs for an overnight hike to San Gorgonio peak (So. CA.) last week. These packs are incredibly lightweight and extremely well made. Because the packs are less than 3 pounds, we were able to pack everything, including our hydration bladders, needed for a mid 30's overnight with room to spare. Total weight for mine and my husbands was 20 and 22 pounds respectively. The mesh side pockets and all the loops to hook extras along the back provided easy access to snacks, cameras, etc. The only critism is the sternum strap on the female pack is too high and will have to lowered. We had a really enjoyable, comfortable, hike using these packs. Can't wait to take them out again!

Comments about REI Quick UL 45 Pack:

I have one of the earlier of these packs and I absolutely love it. Compared to other brands in its league you would have to dish out a lot more money! With this pack it competes very well with the other brands AND with a lower price tag! REI just keeps on improving their design and innovation with their own gear, it's great! This pack is very adjustable and comfortable. I have taken this on many trips. The only thing you want to be careful with when dealing with these kinds of materials (light weight materials) is that they can be tear easier than the bulkier/heavier materials.
