Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I've gone through two pairs. Thought the first zipper (cargo pocket) malfunction was my fault. Second pair though I realized, the cargo zipper has no stop section to it. If you close it too much, it will come off the track and not open again, ever. You will have to slice the zipper to get it open. Leg zippers can become a problem over time too - not smooth at all - like a bad sleeping bag. On my last trip, I just kept the pants on, as I didn't want to be stuck in shorts for the rest of the trip. Fabric, fit, functionality and drying are exceptional and are the only reason to buy these pants. Not having your zippers work though, on zipper pants is a no brainer - REI should fix this immediately, as I can see from the other posts I am not alone and I am sure these pants are going back to the store all the time over this zipper issue! Maybe you get what you pay for, I'd be happy to pay an extra $20-$30 bucks for these pants with quality zippers. But currently, they aren't worth the pain at any price!

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I bought a pair in 2006 and was very impressed. They outlasted several pairs of heavier work pants and are still in great shape after a lot of bush wacking. I bought a second pair in 2009 and the fabric and craftsmanship is of much poorer quality. In less than a month they have developed several holes and many seams are comming apart while my old pair are still going strong. I am very disappointed.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I've purchased and worn these pants for years now. They are lightweight and quick drying - perfect for hiking/backpacking. They can be shorts on summer days (wash the detachable legs together with the shorts to keep the colors matched). Attach the legs when it cools down or the skeeters come out. Put on light fleece under layer and use them in the winter too.
My newest pants become casual wear and the older ones are for outdoor activities. My oldest pair are 9 years old and still in fair condition after lots of use. Watch out around the campfire and near sharp edges with this nylon!
I didn't give 5 stars for the following reasons:
(1) Meshing in hand pockets is not very durable. Keep your keys out of there if you can remember!
(2) Newer design has a horrible zipper on the cargo pocket that tends to jam a lot.
(3) The fabric seems to rip more easily than the older version of these pants or more expensive brands. Still a pretty good value compared to the other brands.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I've been wearing convertible pants for over a decade and these are the best I've had for the following reasons:
1) They can actually be removed over a hiking boot (try this before you buy any other pair... what's the point if they can't? You may as well change into shorts if you're going to have to take off your boots!)
2) They still have decent length when the legs are zipped off; they're almost to the knee like board shorts (I hate the ones that look like 1977 shorts when unzipped)
3) They've got oodles of functional pockets to carry everthing you need for a day hike
4) They come in a dark color that wont show dirt too quickly
I haven't yet had any zipper trouble like some others have, but I've only had them a month... either I'm lucky or they got a new zipper supplier!

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I have worn Sahara shorts for several years and absolutely love them. I ordered the convertible pants but was very disappointed because the legs are HUGE -- almost comically wide! I appreciate that convertibles have wide legs, but these are crazy wide.[...]

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I own two pair of these pants, grey and khaki. Just got back from Europe traveling three weeks by train. Pants held my travel wallet in the security pocket, camera and sunglasses in the other pockets. Washed them twice, quick drying. No problems with zippers and the zip/hook & loop security pocket is great for train stations and airports.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I was a bit unsure about these pants since I wondered if the nylon would be breathable but no problem. And the pants are very light and comfortable (sometimes have to check to make sure I'm actually wearing pants). I haven't encountered any of the problems mentioned by other reviewers (zipper, keys snagging inside pockets). They're working out so well, I'm getting a second pair. I only wish these pants were offered in a 28" inseam because I have to buy the 30" inseam and then get them shortened. If I didn't, the pants would drag on the ground.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 30" Inseam:
I purchase a lot of clothes and I am really particular about pants. If pants are not a good fit and the material is not right I won't wear 'em. These Sahara pants are different than any others I own. The material is perfect, the fit is perfect, the colors are perfect, the feel is perfect, the look is perfect, the durability is perfect. I can't find anything I don't like about them. The zippers seem perfectly fine to me. I mostly only use the front zipper when I reluctantly take the pants off at night to go to bed--they would actually be comfortable enough to use as pajamas if you wanted--what an idea--I might just try that tonight! I bought my first-ever pair of these a few months ago and have since bought five more pair. If they came in any more colors I would buy more of each color. As you can see, I love these pants. I have many other similar non-REI pants in my closet (name brand ones). Frequently I will put on one of these other non-REI pants on in the morning and before I leave the bedroom, I have already changed to the REI Sahara pants. They are really just that much better. As you can see, I am a fan of these pants. I wear them all the time. The only thing I can think of that I would make different on these pants is I would add belt loops to the waist band of the pants so I could wear some of my leather belts with the pants. Oh well, that's not a biggie; the belt they come with is fine. Anyone thinking about purchasing these has my highest recommendation & if you buy them and don't like them for some reason, give me a call, I will make you an offer you can't refuse

I went back to return the pair that my zipper had broken on and it appears that they have fixed the issue with the zipper pockets. They now have a metal clasp on the end of the zipper to stop it from going too far.

Would be a 5 star rating if the zipper didnt get stuck.
Love the fast drying after taking a dip or after hand cleaning while traveling
