Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

Let me start off by saying that this is a pretty good for the price. It's light and takes up no room in your bag. Pit zips help pretty well with breathability. I can't comment on the durability because I haven't had it long enough and I'm pretty parnoid about taking care of my gear so it doesn't get beat up like most peoples gear. For water proofness the jacket holds up pretty well against light to mild showers. Anything heavier than that I wouldn't put my money on keeping dry. I live in the CA bay are and when the remnants from that typhoon hit us in late Sep, early Oct, I had hard time staying dry. With heavy rains like that, the jacket really began to absorb water, adding weight and taking out the ultra light part.

Also I'm 5'8 150lbs. and bought this in a medium. The jacket barley reaches my waist and barley leaves enough room for multiple layers underneath. I also wish it was a little longer on the back. So I would go a size larger than what you normally wear.

Overall it's a good jacket for the price and good for anyone who is just getting into outdoor activities and reluctant to through down a lot of money on gear. If you have the money to spend, I suggest the Arc'Teryx Theta AR. I plan on upgrading to one with my Christmas money.

I took this to Costa Rica and it served it's purpose of keeping me dry (from the waste up at least). In fact, in one of the really heavy rains while I was hiking, I used it to wrap around my "waterproof" camera bag just to ensure that it had the most protection.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

Love the jacket for fall and summer weather. The lining around the neck is awesome, and it never feels clammy like some jackets do. I wish I had this on a two week excursion to Mt. Washington....

Only flaw is you better have layers if you're heading into colder territory, and its worth noting that the jacket feels paper thin and very likely to tear.

But my complaints are exceptions and everything else I don't mention is absolutely fabulous.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

I bought this jacket to replace a different rain jacket that was stolen while on a trip to South America. The first time I used this jacket was on a trip to Iceland. This jacket performed flawlessly. The temperatures while in Iceland ranged from the 30s to the 50s with strong winds which pushed you all over the place and driving rains almost the entire trip. Not once did I get wet nor did I ever feel the wind through the jacket even though some of the gusts approached 50 mph. The only thing I would like to see changed on this jacket would be to add those spring loaded push button things on the hood drawstring. But overall this is an awesome jacket.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

I use this product for everything from everyday bike-commuting on campus to outdoor climbing adventures to backpacking trips. I must say that it has, up until this point, lived up to every expectation that I had when purchasing it. I was a little leery about investing this much in an ultra light rain jacket, being that this jacket was my 1st time spending this much on a rain jacket.

I put it through it's first "real" test a couple of nights ago. Standing for 4 hours in 45 degree raining weather. I was curious as to the water-proofibility of this jacket but that night proved to provide the evidence I needed to love this jacket. It was a solid, hard rain for the majority of the time, nothing under the jacket got wet, at all. So all in all, the jacket has many pros - the armpit vents, chin-guard, adjustable hood, packability, breathability, and durable construction.

I only have one con up to this point. It is the front chest-pocket-it claims to have a water-resistant zipper. I understand it doesn't say waterPROOF, so I cannot truly expect it to be. After standing in a good, hard rain for 4+ hours, the front-chest pocket had a pool of water in it.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

Have walked and jogged through lots of rain in the nearly three months I have owned this jacket. Its very light and perfectly waterproof. The extra large (XL) size just compresses into the included stuff sack which fits into a pouch hanging under the back of my bicycle seat. The hide-away hood tucks conveniently into a comfortable collar. Breatheability is a relative term in the outerwear world, but this performs as well as any garmet I own, especially with the pit zips open. The rip-stop shell looks tough enough for its weight, but I wouldn't try to hike with it through thorny brambles and tough brush. Who knows how long the inner, waterproof layer will hold up, but so far, so good.

I was really looking forward to using this jacket and being incredibly impressed. Unfortunately, the first time I wore it, before I even left the parking lot, I noticed random spots on the sleeves where water was not beading. Since I only own one of these jackets I can't say if they all suffer from poor QC but because mine does, I'll be returning it and buying another brand.

but not so much when it your jacket leaks on you.

I travel for a living and pack my bag with gear that i think i might end up using. This jacket has saved me many a time in torrential downpours and crazy storms. It's extremely compact and light, easily stored in any bag, and provides great protection.

I would have given it a 5 but it has just started to leak and like a number of other users, is not breathable at all. I sweat pretty profusely and when I'm hiking with this jacket it feels like i have saran wrap stuck to me skin. No good. Thank goodness for REI Coop. I'm taking it back for a replacement!

Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

Must have one of the originals, purchased in 2003 or so. Have worn this all over. I can say FOR CERTAIN that the "waterproof" qualities DEFINITELY WEAR OUT.
Once upon a time it was extremely good wet weather protection. Now I cannot trust it to keep me or the items in the pockets dry in any sort of medium to heavy downpour. Collects moisture on the inside as well VERY EASILY (body evaporation). If you want REAL rain protection, go for REAL GORE-TEX or one of the post-patent-free Gore-tex knock-offs (min 15000 rating + as GoreTex is 30,000). Sadly I am QUITE disappointed by the failure over time and I would NOT buy another one.

Comments about REI Ultra Light Rain Jacket - Men's:

It seems the biggest objection I have read in the comments is that people get wet. From my experience I notice people tend to overdress when wearing a shell, therefore they sweat and get wet from their own moisture. I have used this jacket in winter conditions and on serious backpacking expeditions in Alaska without issue. The secret with any layering is start out chilled. Once you warm up shed layers if you have that "damp" feeling. Great jacket.... trust me!
