Still works, but may not be the best
While the unit has lots of features, the button for the light falls off easily. Since it was one of the reasons to buy it, would make me NOT recommend it again. The whistle is loud and the other aspects work fine. The three batteries, may not be cost prohibitive to replace. I'll look into that at batteries.com.
Good idea; bad execution.
Sure, it's fun to think that so many useful tools can be packed into one small unit... but this thing is just a chintzy toy for junior's backyard adventures. The light got snagged on my pack and broke almost immediately, and the thermometer didn't seem to be very accurate. The magnifying glass and mirror appear to be of questionable utility. So, you're left with a serviceable emergency compass and whistle.
Piece of junk
Piece of junk. Dime store quality. Flashlight doesn’t work, everything cheap quality.
poorly made
Mine came with corroded batteries, so the light did not work. Replacement batteries were very hard to find, but I did, but when I put them in, the black button switch for the light fell out and was lost. Can still use the other features without the light but that was one of the reasons I bought it. Really just a cheap plastic toy.
Automatically lights up the inside of your pack!
As I was packing my backpack, the flashlight was constantly blinking at me. I bought the device because of all its functionality. But a flashlight that will go on in your pack is unforgivable in an outdoor product! Perhaps a permanent tab, like the insulating shipping tab that it ships with. But something other than a trivially pressed, exposed switch on the uppermost part of the device. You hike off, thinking you've got one last backup flashlight... Nope
light switch is poorly designed
First one I bought the light would not turn on. Returned it for another one and the light will not turn off. If I can get it off and just touch or move it the light comes on and stays on. Other features are OK.. REI is the best for easy returns.
Doesn't last long.
The flashlight button is too sensitive and dies quickly. I purchased a second one to see if it was operator error (me). The second one dies just as fast. If it's in your emergency bag and the push button touches anything, it will illuminuate. Then when you replace the batteries, the connecting wire doesn't go back in right and won't turn back on. It needs a solid on/off button. It also feels like it's cheaply made. REI can find a better one. Don't waste your money on this.
Clever and versatile, but wish it were sturdier
I love the functionality of this clever, lightweight device. But as others have noted, it's pretty flimsy. Long ago the light stopped working because the battery compartment fell apart, along with the on/off button. I still use it for the compass, thermometer, whistle, mirror and magnifying glass and carry a separate light.
All kinds of usage.
I got this to keep in my car. Then I tried out the whistle and found my dogs came running. They ignore any other summons.
Works well
We recently used this after taking a wrong turn in Madrid. It was evening, the map was hard to read and we were disoriented. The compass helped orient the map correctly, the light and the magnifying glass both helped us read the map. Saved us a long walk in the wrong direction! Good for urban traveler.
