Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

I've tried steepers you drop in your cup, regular drip brewers, tea bag-like singles, instant coffee...none of them come close to the consistent quality of brew I get out of this mug. This is the best combination of all "styles" -- it's quick, puts the coffee right into the water, and you can control the brewing time. I'm not very prone to writing reviews, but the rich flavor I get time after time from this product inspired me to put the mug down for a few minutes, create an REI account, and write a review. Yes, it's that refreshing of a product.

To start with, you get the best results if you use a good quality coffee and grind the beans as you need them (e.g. a week's worth at a time). I have been using some organic Hawaiian coffee that was only marginally acceptable in my regular drip coffee pot. When ground slightly coarsely, even with my cheap blade grinder, the results are exponentially better. If you use a blade grinder, though, you need to grind the beans with short 1-2 second pulses, rather than just leaning on the button and letting it turn the beans into powder. Even if I do grind the beans a little too long, the fine mesh screen in the lid keeps any sludge from passing through. An excellent touch. My brother has a French press mug from that ubiquitous chain with the round green sign, yet his has no screen in the lid, so the last few sips are like bitter mud. The bold flavor got me hooked on French press mugs, though, and this one is far better. I thought the mediocre flavor I'd been getting all this time was from the coffee, but the same beans in this mug are almost intoxicatingly delicious.

The mug keeps my coffee plenty hot for a long time. I like to sip a little here and there to savor the flavor, rather than gulp it down. This mug is perfect for that, and is frequently at my side during various parts of the day. I hate having to get up and jolt my java in the microwave because it got cold on me before I finished it. I've never had to do that with this mug.

Cleanup is very simple, too. Even after the empty mug and the grounds have been sitting for hours, a good rinse under hot water is all it takes to ready it for another round. After 3-4 mugs, I just put a few drops of dish washing liquid in it, fill it half way with hot water, put the lid on and then run the plunger up and down a few times to squeeze the suds through the mesh. Comes out clean and like new every time.

This mug has made morning or rainy day coffee when camping a real treat, instead of an "also ran". Though I haven't used it too much, the extra storage compartment in the base means great coffee can be ready to go later by just adding hot water. You can even put any sugar in there ahead of time, then just add those liquid non-refrigerated creamers and the water when you are ready.

I only used to drink coffee with breakfast on the weekends because my drip coffee maker just didn't make anything special to look forward to. Now I'm pretty much a daily drinker thanks to the incredibly rich flavor this mug brings out, flavor I've only tasted in a very few coffee houses and restaurants. Now that I've finally finished my organic Hawaiian beans, I look forward to having several different bags of beans in the freezer that I can grind a few days worth of and have a selection of tasty brews at my fingertips to suit my hankerings.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I think the cost is just a bit high. However, given that I can get rich fresh brewed coffee at my fingertips without paying $5 a cup at a chain store, the cost becomes less important with each delicious mug.

I would absolutely recommend this mug to anyone who wants to make some righteous Joe one delicious mug at a time.

No good for the weekend hike

Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

The idea for this mug is a good one -- allowing the user to make two cups of fresh coffee on two separate mornings by only adding hot water. I thought it would be perfect for weekend hikes, but after using it for my daily commute I'm having second thoughts.I've used this mug for just a week and, as previously mentioned by another reviewer, the circular piece holding the stow-away container in the bottom falls out easily. That's not so bad in my car, but if I lose it on the trail, it's gone for good. They certainly should have spent the extra $0.25 to make this piece screw securely into the cup.Secondly, this mug is made for REI... why would they not put some kind or ring or carabiner on the handle so it could be attached to a backpack? There's absolutely no way to bring it on the trail with you without putting it in a pocket of your backpack.Lastly, while on the trail the cup is sure to get upended routinely, yet there is no way to cover the sipping hole. Other coffee mugs have one piece that rotates over the other to close the hole. This product is lacking the attention to detail expected of a[$] coffee mug. I'd hoped for more from REI.

Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

All was well and good with this cup. As a caffiene addict I truly enjoyed the french press rather than nasty office coffee. However, after only a few weeks of use I lost the extra grounds container because the bottom panel just popped off when I pulled it from my bag.

Now I'm less than a year in and the handle broke off. Since this thing is too heavy and bulky to take anywhere rugged, I'd pretty annoyed that the handle broke form everyday use. (It sheared right off.)

Your better off with a standard travel mug that is less bulkly and a french press, not this wretched fusion.

Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

This product can sure kick up your customer service and human resource abilities. I saw it for the fist time while I was wildland firefighting in Cali. The owner really beat it up (it looked liked it had been used for a vehicle chock block) and said he had it for about a year and it still functioned perfect. The extra mesh filter in the lid is awesome. I’m a French press kind of guy and I eat way too many coffee grounds with my other presses. Yes, I own multiple. It’s very ergonomic and the flavor saver coffee storage device in the bottom is equally as cool as the other features. Plus, it comes with a normal travel lid…so…BUY IT.

Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

This frech press coffee mug made brewing the first cup at the campsite a breeze. The strainer in the lid and the cupping design of the press really kept the grinds where they belong, at the bottom of the cup. If you use cream or sugar, add it to the grinds before you add the water. It made such a great cup of coffee on the camping trip I started using it on my commute as well.

Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

Notice how the base tapers down? That is so it will fit within the cup caddy of your automobile. I would not think that an item of this one's bulkiness, would be a good choice for a backpacking excursion. For car camping, it is perfect, and I've used it often.

Likewise, I have to note, that for backpacking, the tapered base should prove to be problematic regarding stability when set down.

I spent around 6 weeks living out of a motel for my work, and used this item daily to make my coffee. I found that it retains the heat quite well, and cleans up easily. I have no complaints.

I would give it 5 Stars if it came with some kind of removable, stable, base attachment for use outside of the car caddy. this is not the best item to have on a picnic table.

Comments about REI Double Shot Press Mug:

I received this french press mug over a yr ago as a birthday present. My friend was tired of me whining about the bad coffee at work. I use a french press at home, and now i use one at work. I use it on average 4 days a week. It is great for people wanting a good cup of coffee at the office w/o having to spend too much. As for build quality, i haven't had the problems with storage receptacle described by others. It keeps the coffee hot for a good long time. The only reason i don't give 5 stars is the handle. My handle hasn't fallen off, yet. I can feel it loosening and know it will fall off sometime in the future. And when it does, i will buy a replacement for work and transition this one o a secondary life as my camp coffee mug. One last point- it is one of the best at keeping grounds out of the coffee i have used. The press design is top notch.

Great mug, use this to make fresh hot coffee at my office rather than the nasty stuff from the machine. Makes great coffee and does a good job filtering the grounds. Haven't utilized the storage container for extra grounds in the base, but will be handy if going somewhere.
