Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
This is a fine, sturdy canteen that will hold up under just about any conditions. Its empty weight is a bit on the high side for the back-country hiker, and it's not a good choice if you need insulation (winter-folk take note, hope you like your water solid!). For all that it would seem a fine choice, but for me one thing kills the deal: noise.
It's not the banging or anything like that. If there's any water in it at all, it just makes a little "thunk" when it bumps into something. The downside is the horrible screech of metal on metal as you twist off the cap; the threads are bare steel on bare steel. Goodbye to any wildlife anywhere within earshot when you open it! And if that's what you're in the woods to see, oh well...

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
I too bought this to replace my plastic bottles. I was thrilled to see that this did fit in my car's drink holder (which is small), and it fits in my various bags and backpacks. It is tall, however, so it may not fit neatly in some messenger bags.
No problem with leaking, and I only detect a slight taste once in a while. It's not insulated, so it does get hot if you put tea or coffee in it.
I also have a Sigg bottle. The lid on the Sigg is plastic, so liquids do contact plastic. On this bottle, however, the lid is lined with stainless steel, and the gasket appears to be clear silicone. I have not had any problems with the gasket despite two months of daily use with hot and cold liquids. Sigg also recommends against juices and acidic beverages. Juices are safe in this bottle.
I bought two of the 27 oz. bottles, and am considering buying the 40 oz.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
I searched for weeks for the perfect reusable bottle. I tried other stainless bottles but had problems with them leaking. I finally ordered the Klean Kanteen and I'm *SO* happy that i did! I use it on virtually daily basis.
I have both the loop top cap which has a completely leakproof seal as well as the sport top. I use them both and find it very handy to be able to choose between them. The sport top allows for one handed drinking. While not specifically "leakproof", I've not had problems with leaks. The mouth of the bottles are wide enough to get a regular sized dishwashing brush down into as well as standard ice cubes. It's comfortable to drink from the bottle mouth as well with the rolled edge and I don't have the problems with drinks splashing out that I sometime do with standard wide mouth bottles. the shape of the neck of the bottle makes it easy to hold securely. Klean Kanteen bottles clean up very well. I put it in the dishwasher regularly and haven't had any problems.
I much prefer it to the plastic/lexan bottles and to the aluminum bottles with an interior coating. I feel it's a healthier alternative especially with the new studies showing that many plastics leach out chemicals. Since the Klean Kanteen is stainless, if I ever needed to in a pinch, I could use it over a camp stove or fire. The 27oz size fits in most cupholders and should fit most bike water bottle cages (though some can be a tight fit). Klean Kanteen makes a bike bottle cage that will definitely work with it if you have problems with other models. Also remember, years and years down the road when you feel the bottle has finally reached the end of it's useful life, you can recycle it and avoid the landfill.
In my opinion, this is the best reusable bottle you can buy. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
I bought this because of the studies about plastics leaching into the water. Seems sturdy, and the water tastes fine, though it is significantly heavier than plastic. There have been some comments here about it being noisy -- I suggest gripping the bottle tightly around the neck when you open or close it, which dampens the metallic reverberations. The manufacturer says the plastic lid is non-leaching, though I'd prefer stainless, which they also make[...]. I wish REI would sell these with the stainless lids standard, or at least as an accessory. I do like the loop cap, which is also available in stainless. I just ordered a second, 40 oz bottle, as I'm sometimes running the 27 oz dry faster than I expect.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
After throwing away all of my Nalgene Bottles (due to the recent BPA scare), my wife and I looked into a variety of options. Klean Kanteen was one of the ONLY water bottles that was healthy and well received. SIGG bottles unfortunately are made of aluminum, so they're lined with an epoxy (that might or might not contain BPA?). But since these suckers are stainless, they don't need a lining! Keep in mind that this one is FAIRLY LARGE, so be prepared for that. We especially liked that the screw cap was ALSO stainless steel, while the smaller version's cap is a plastic material.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
Clean taste. I use it to and from my job (I'm a professor). The one criticism is it bends very easily if dropped (mine already has two bends in it). While I like its capacity and clean taste, I'm not fond of its fragility and am less inclined to buy another since I think it is a bit overpriced given its easy-to-bend tendency(and I do need another one!).

Many wouldn't think of the 27oz. Kleen Kanteen as belonging in an ultralight backpackers gear, but after using one for the past 2 years I don't know how I ever got along without it. This thing truly personifies the ideal that everything you pack should have multiple functions in order to justify it's weight.
I've used it to melt snow and boil gallons of water over various backpacking stoves and campfires for coffee, tea and ration hydration. For better performance over a backpacking stove, very loosly wrap a piece of tin foil around it and the burner so it heats along its whole surface(don't forget your gloves).
The neoprene insulator sold by KK can help the hot stay hot and the cold stay cold. Slide a chemical hand warmer in between and put the whole thing in a boot sock for even better fluid heat retention.
In cold weather camping, fill it, boil it, cap it tight, slide it into a boot sock and stick it in the toe of your sleeping bag along with your batteries, pressurized fuel bottle, camera, feet, and anything else that works better warm.
Sometimes in the wilderness (urban or otherwise) it can be a comfort knowing that an effective club, flail, or bolo is right at your fingertips. The carry strap sold by KK lends itself well to this purpose (Practice! Practice! Practice!).
After polishing, the base can be used as an emergency signal mirror.
While not strictly recommended, I have used it to pound in a few tent stakes in frozen/hard ground in a pinch.
I've even used it as a line weight for tossing over limbs to hang my bear can when a suitable rock wasn't to be found.
While mine looks like it's gone through a few wars, I am resisting replacing it because it just has so much "character". I'd no sooner go backpacking without my favorite knife than I would without my KK!
Even with the extra weight and without the BPA/taste/environmental issues, the KK beats plastic hands down.

I am very pleased with this canteen. The Klean Kanteen Web site includes accessories that improve the convenience of the product: sport caps, neoprene insulater sleeves, etc.. ([@]This is written in response to the review about the magnetic properties of the bottles. Stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains a significant amount of chromium. The chromium forms an inert oxide layer on the exposed surfaces of the steel which helps reduce the potential for rusting. A basic ferritic stainless steel will be magnetic. The most common stainless steel alloys, however, are austenitic and have a higher chromium content but also contain significant quantities of nickel to strengthen the oxide layer. It is these high-nickel, austenitic stainless steels that are not magnetic; it is the nickel that causes the loss of magnetic attraction.

Comments about Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.:
I bought this water bottle to replace my old plastic Nalgene bottles that I feared may have BPA. I was looking for a user-friendly, great-tasting, environmentally-friendly, BPA-free water bottle for my everyday use both at work and at play (hiking, etc). I LOVE THIS BOTTLE! This stainless steel bottle leaves water tasting great and keeps it cold. No plastic after-taste. The bottle is BPA-free, including the plastic cap which is also nontoxic. It doesn't leak. It is not heavy to carry and fits great in my work bag. It is fully recyclable when you are done with it. It now also comes in all sorts of great colors, just like those fancy SIGG bottles that you pay much more for. I like the wide mouth here, as opposed to the SIGGs, which allows you to put in ice cubes or to clean it with a kitchen soapy scrubber at the end of the day. My only very minor complaint is that this cap is a screw-off, which takes a few seconds longer to access your beverage, than a flip-up lid like the Camelbak bottles. You can buy a sport top from the Klean Kanteen website but I haven't gotten around to it. Would be nice if REI carried it. Great bottle. Get it, you won't be sorry.
