    This product looked great from the get-go and I anxiously waited for it's backorder arrival (no fault of REI). Your first setup is not easy, but you will figure it out after a few times. It looked great - very sporty, large, lightweight, and a nice color. On the first seup one of the tension buckles broke instantly. Although disappointed, I figured I could fix this myself. After about a day set up, both outside corners near the vehicle ripped back about 8-10 inches from the hooks in the end of the top pole. There was no extreme wind. I just happened to look up and one was ripped out. The next day the other went. There is no fixing this. I feel this is a huge engineering flaw. The edge reinforcement on the material is only 1/4 inch. There is no way to hold the tension generated at these corners on a 1/4 inch seam, especially when there is no additional layering of material for strength. I sent this back.

      We bought this to use as an awning off the side of our camper. Lighter, more compact, and cheaper than the usual installed factory awning. Our first use was in the Pintler mountains of Montana in base camp for horse trips. One day it withstood 50 mph winds and a 15 min. marble sized hailstorm with rain. We set up the screen house under the awning to shade it from hot sun, worked great. For use as an awnig this is a great piece of gear.

      Took a few minutes studying the manual on first set up but after that it's pretty quick and easy. Multiple options to attach to any roof rack. Seems to hold up well in the wind IF it is guyed well. We also attached it to a fence for shade on one outing. Material has held up well, poles are good quality and seem plenty stout. For a van or SUV awning it works great. Takes a bit more time to set up than a pull out type awning but its less than half the price, and the multiple set up options are nice for varying conditions, rain, sun, wind, bugs... My only complaints: the pole color is gold; not a big deal but would have preferred something a bit more neutral. And, the included stakes are a bit wimpy so be sure to pack a few larger sand type stakes.

      I used the canopy as a stand alone shade provider on a week long supported bicycle ride. Knowing we would be spending off bike hours in sun baked school yards etc. I knew I would need to get out of the sun when off the bike. Not having a vehicle to attach it to I attempted to set it up free standing after buying 2 additional poles and guy lines. This is a very difficult setup and requires at least 2 other people to help. It will work this way if you can get it up and guy line supported.
      I ended up using it as lean to most of the time with the car side of the canopy staked to the ground. This worked well as I put the staked end toward the west to block the sun better.
      It was popular hanging out spot for others wanting to get out of the sun too.
      I also us it with my 85 VW Vanagon while hunting and camping. I love it but it can be hard to put up alone especially if it is winding. Once up though it will stand up to a lot of wind.
