I agree with other reviews. This tool is disappointing. It has not broken on us, but we have found it is not great at holding an edge, the saw falls out, and the axe head is actually too small to split a normal log well. I have taken to just bringing my old hand axe with me if there is going to be a need to chop wood. It is heavier, but it does the job. This tool was overthought and overdesigned to the point where it just doesn't work well.

There's a few design flaws with this ax. First, while trying to deliver a light weight ax that is easily packable, Gerber sacrificed the weight needed to deliver efficient strikes to cut through wood. The light weight of the ax takes getting used to when swinging and if you do not follow through your swing the hatchet can simply bounce off your target. (and perhaps hit you instead) Second the metal used in the hatchet's construction does not hold an edge well and is prone to rust, like most other Gerber products. Gerber assures the injection molded handle will not come free of the ax head, however after using the hatchet in intended purposes without any unusual force, the hatchet will break just below the blade head on the handle. If you are in need of a ax that will last and hold an edge, I highly recommend Estwing's Sportsman Ax. I bought this ax after being fed up with Gerber's products, and is strapped to the side of my pack on every outing. What I gave up in weight with Gerber's ax I gained in reliability and craftsmanship with Estwing.

Holds Edge Nicely. Was worried at first that the head was going to seperate from the handle as it seems thin. It cuts very nicely, the saw works better than I hoped. Everything you would expect it to be from Gerber.
Would definetly Recoment any of their axes/hatchets.
(Please forgive spelling as its not my strong suit)

I bought this axe for a short backpacking trip the night before I left. The blade was pretty sharp, but I sharpened it a bit more myself before leaving, and even after chopping up a lot of hardwood, it held its' blade quite well. My girlfriend was worried the blade might come off, but it was fine at the end of the 2-day trip. There's a little rubber latch thing at the bottom to hold the saw in place, and since there was the magnet in there, I removed it before the trip, which was a mistake. The magnet wasn't enough to hold the saw in when I was using it, so I had to just remove it when I was chopping wood. I'll be keeping the rubber strap on it next time. It seems to be weighted nicely, and I like the holster for it, but after a night of chopping hard wood without gloved, my hand was fairly blistered. Overall it was a good buy for this trip (maybe a little pricey..), but I'm happy I brought it, and glad I bought it from REI for when it possible breaks.

This hatchet broke on the first use. No Joke! I was splitting STORE BOUGHT fire wood and the handle broke within the first few chops. I wouldn't recomend this to ANYONE! It is cheap and I am incredibly surprised REI continues carrying a worthless product like this. Boo!

I dont get all the posts about the axe head busting off. I use this all the time on camping trips for hammering various things and chopping up some tough logs. Maybe the others got some defective product. My only complaint is the saw is worthless and DANGEROUS. Remove it, it can come flying out while swinging.

I bought this axe to replace the Gerber Gator Combo (Knife-In-Handle Version); see my review. For the same reason I did not like the latter, I do not like the former. With REI only carrying 2 axes total, both from Gerber, I put my faith in that REI decides to carry quality products and purchased this. I would have to say, this is the first time I have been disappointed. Basically, this product just does not feel solid. What I find most annoying is this extra tool-in-the-handle gimmick. Although, I do like the idea, in reality, I do not like the result. Gerber "recommends" that you take out the tool while using the axe. If you (Gerber) are not confident that the tool will not stay in the handle, I do not care to keep such a product in my collection. Also, the odd feel of the straight rubber/plasticized handle got even less comfortable after taking out the saw; lack of balance.

All I want is a solid, decent, well-balanced axe...sadly I cannot get one at REI.

I bought and used this for a week long biking and camping trip through the Superior National Forest, it worked as I thought it should. I used it to hammer tent stakes and split fire wood, I didn't have any problems with it. The saw that comes with it is a joke and I couldn't imagine a use for it. over all it is a hatchet that does what it is supposed to do.

I bought this ax to keep in my pick-up for hunting and car camping. The first time I used it on a 1 inch branch on a maple tree the edge chipped away. I brought it back to REI and exchanged it [...] Being curious I went to a different hardwood tree and chopped on a about a 1inch branch again. Same problem. The edge chipped off on ax number 2. I am trying ax number 3 later today. Gerber usually makes good stuff but lately they've had some problems. The Bear Grylls survival knife is a good example along with this ax. I've heard their quality problems started when they moved their manufacturing to Asia.
