Comments about REI Whistle Key Chain - Small:
This is a compact, durable and loud whistle to carry in case of emergency. I have my young children wear one on a necklace when they are in the woods or in crowds in case they get separated from me. It does not take much breath to sound the whistle loudly, so it is ideal for children and the elderly.
As one of the 10 essentials, everyone needs one and this one is compact and virtually indestructible.

I think the main purpose here is just to be a cute keychain in the shape of a whistle. Reading the other reviews, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. I dont think they are designed very well, meaning, its up to the batch during manufactuering that determines if its built correct enough to produce sound. Mine didnt, it just blew air. At first I thought it was me, and didnt know how a whistle worked, but after trying various mouth positions, could barely get a sound out. I think you would need to go into the store and blow on them to try them out first, to find one that works.

Comments about REI Whistle Key Chain - Small:
I'm slowly getting my gear up to speed and have been hiking seriously for only a few months. I noticed a heavy-duty hiker friend of mine and his wife both had whistles on their packs. On a whim with my first order at REI, I added 2 of these to my order. One was to go on my pack and the other for my girlfriends purse as a just-good-to-have. The whistles are solidly made and attractive, but that isn't enough to overcome their drawback of not actually producing a whistle.
I do not know if we got a bad batch, as others don't seem to have had the same problem. When I opened the first one it did whistle a little bit, but sounded more like a lot of moving air with a slight bit of noise. I thought maybe it was just defective, but we had the same problem with the 2nd whistle. I don't know if moisture makes the problem worse, but after a bit of time trying to make these work, they stopped making any noise at all.
A whistle is not something that would be used often, and I am glad we tried them before just putting them on a pack or in a purse. We ended up picking up 2 standard silver whistles which give a pretty pleasing shriek.
