Comments about REI Taped Mittens - Unisex:
I have been on the search for a replacement to my old Outdoor Research Mt. Baker mitts for literally years- I've found it in these REIs! I'm actually tempted to buy another pair or two! I found these randomly while passing through Portland, OR on my way up to Mt. Hood for some summer riding. They offer a simple water/wind resistant breathable mitt shell perfect for using alone (like I did on Hood in the summer) or great for layering for winter camping. The use of a friction buckle at the wrist and another simple elastic pull for the gauntlet is awesome too- with the OR Mt. Bakers I had they used velcro which became totally useless in the wet powder the Sierra get. They also dried very fast. I'd sweat on the ride down and then take off the gloves and they'd be dry by the end of the 10 minute or less ride up the Palmer life.
If it wasn't obvious before, I love these mitts but am waiting to test their true value in more winter like conditions in addition to seeing how long they put up with the abuse snowboarding dishes out to the seams and palms. I'm optimistic though since the palms are neoprene and the seams taped! Awesome.

Comments about REI Taped Mittens - Unisex:
I bought these mitten shells two years ago to use as wind shells for winter cycling. I ride in an old pair of ski mittens that aren't quite warm enough; adding these shells keeps my hands toasty warm.
I have also worn them shoveling snow in a sleet/rain mix, and they kept my hands perfectly dry but not clammy. The rubber palms kept the shovel from slipping around in my hands. Now I use them for all winter activities where staying dry and warm is essential.
The mitts have cord loops that fit over the wrists so that when you take them off briefly for finger work, the mitts dangle from your wrists and don't get dropped or lost. The cuff can be tightened or released by grabbing the rubber cord tips in your teeth! These mittens are simple but brilliant.
The size you need will depend on what you're going to put under them. You want them big enough to not compress the inner layers.
