Comments about Asolo AFS 8000 Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
ive used this boot for a whole winter climb season up here in alaska. it took about three climbs before i was able to get the boot adjusted properly, sole inserts, shims in the tonge, ect. now that the boot fits me right im happy. this year 09 im only using the boot for cold wx climbs i.e anything under -10, ive had them -30 and they preformed well. they take to crampons well, but are a bit stiff on horizantal movements (name a hard shell boot that isnt) for a plastic boot the shells are easy to put on when the temps are below zero, i sleep with the liners in my bag.
not as bulky as the Scarpa's, but they cost twice as much, so unless you were going to use them alot, i would recommend the scarpa.

Comments about Asolo AFS 8000 Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
Wore for Aconcagua and it was fine up to Camp 3 (19,600 ft). On summit day, my feet really hurt. I was afraid I would need to turn around and then the sun came out, which saved my toes. I had heavy duty mountaineering socks with liners on & the toe warmers failed. Could've been worse...
Recommendation: Wear built in gator/plastic for summit day.

Comments about Asolo AFS 8000 Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
This is a great all round boot. I've done 6 hour hikes around freezing, a bit clunky but very comfy. Climbed WI3/4 ice, not super but very good. They seem to be quite grippy on wet rock too.
I've used them down to -30F (don't ask, it was a bad day out), my feet got cold but it wasn't unbearable.

Comments about Asolo AFS 8000 Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
very high quality boot. Never tried it outdoors though. Lots of nice features with high quality laceless inner boot and outerboot has built in arch support. However, this boot is very narrow in the toe box area (narrow in height but also in width). This means that you cannot wiggle your toes without banging into the plastic above as oppossed to the same size koflach boot which gives you plenty of room. Also the narrowness of the toe box means that you can feel your toes when you kick into the ground whereas again, this is not true with the koflach. Strangley, the inner boot is sized large enough, its the outerboot that seems to small for the innerboot. I would think this all a rather serious issue for boot made for high altitute. Also, the boot comes with an amazingly thin stock footbed, which means that substituting it for a thicker custom footbed like superfeet makes the already small toe box that much smaller. On the flip side, I usually prefer narrow boots and very much like my asolo gtx hiking boots...but for standing around in the cold on an expedition you need a little wiggle room. REI needs to carry some other options.

Comments about Asolo AFS 8000 Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
It's unfortunate that the REI stores in my area don't carry plastics because I'm experiencing some bad luck with ordering boot's online. But, maybe you'll be able to benefit from my frustrations. My right foot measures exactly 11 inches. My left foot is slightly longer at about 11 1/4 inches. Originally I ordered SIZE 12's which I had waited about a week for, just to find out they didn't fit. So I sent those back and waited another 3 weeks for my "special ordered" SIZE 13's. Believe it or not, the big toe on my left foot was still rubbing length wise!!! Moral of the story... order big!
I had similar trouble with the Scarpa Invernos as well, so check out that review.
