Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
I've owned several lightweight outer shells. This was the first of many. I bought this when it originally came out (I think it was 2001?) It is updated, and I bought the Precip pants for my financée.
Reasons (Pros):
• very lightweight (lighter than my backpack cover!). We're into ultra light gear so I can hike far and fast.
• packs very small
• it was cheap compared to GORE-TEX at the time. But you can get GORE-TEX at this price now.
Here are the cons:
• Precip employs a LAMINATE coating for it's water proofing and breathability. It's the white colored inner liner. This laminate wears off in the hi-abrasion (neck line and pits) areas in 4-5 years of active use (hiking, camping, hunting). It's updated, but all applied laminates wear off. Even GORE-TEX needs to be treated after years. But it does NOT get rubbed off like a laminate will.
• It is thin so it will tear, do not depend on it in extreme cold or hi-abrasion activities or if you're getting into thorny areas.
This jacket is best for those that want a rain shell that breaths better than PVC, is as water proof as GORETEX (for up to 5 years) and will be used trail hiking (not back country trail blazing—since it will not survive thorns and getting snagged on craggy outcrops).
FYI, I've passed on buying this jacket again. I now own a GORE-TEX Paclite Scott shell. It's VERY abrasion resistant, has fully taped and sealed seams (all zippers are reversed in). It doesn't even HAVE pockets it's so light weight. It does have zippered openings that allow me to get into the chest/map pocket of the mid-weight layer I wear underneath. But then again the GORE-TEX Paclite clothing is 2x - 3x more expensive than the Precip line.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
This is my second Precip. I bought the first one when I moved to VA and the heavy rains they get here. After a few years I noticed the WP layer was delaminating off the hood. Well instead of whining or throwing it away I sent it to Marmot and asked them if it could be fixed under warranty. They called me a week later asking for my replacement size and color and sent me a new one. Needless to say I've used this on many occasions. Backpacking, hiking, cycling, a 3 hour deluge at Jazz Fest where it rained over 6+ inches and other outdoor occasions. I've found it to be very breathable w/ the pit zips and vented pockets to keep me from sweating out the inside. It's great with a fleece base under it for late fall and winter-cold rain and wind protection and having had the second one for over 4 years now of lots of use it's still my go to rain jacket. I'd highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a reasonably price, breathable rain jacket and the fact that Marmot backed it up with a full replacement after a few years of use speaks volumes about them standing behind their products.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
Most people wouldn't expect the same performance from a Nissan Altima as they would from a Nissan GT-R (pick any other similar comparison). As such, we shouldn't expect the PreCip to perform like a 3 layer expedition grade Gore Tex bomb shell. The PreCip is perfect for its intended uses. I've used it extensively for skiing, backpacking, climbing and general outdoor use. I bought a 1st generation PreCip 8 years ago and it has performed remarkably since then. Granted, I take care of my gear. That means I watch where I hike to avoid rips and tears. I've washed it over the years to maintain its DWR. Over those 8 years it has shed water well. The only drawback has been a clammy feeling inside when the activity level picks up. That though has been fixed with the newer version. [...] The newer one has been improved in a number of areas. The older shell would really get stiff if the temperature dropped. It was also "loud" whenever you would move. The newer one is more "soft shellish" in that it's not as loud when you move. The hood is much improved. You can stow it better and it's peripheral vision is greatly enhanced. The inner lining is the biggest improvement. It doesn't feel as clammy when the temps really kick up. Bottom line...if you need a lightweight, waterproof, breathable shell for many different activities and want only one...get the PreCip.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
I bought this hoping it would replace a similar North Face product that had worn out. The PreCip gets very low marks for water resistance. The hood seams on mine are either untaped or completely faulty, meaning that when it's worn in the rain, you get a wet head within minutes. Barely 6 months old and never worn with a backpack, it already gets fabric soak-throughs on the shoulder. Just returned damp from a 10-minute dog walk in medium rain.
This is not a good jacket, and even for light recreational use, it feels clammy inside due to the lack of liner and plasticky finish.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
I was impressed by the many reviews (advertisements)that I read on this product. Unfortunately, I discovered first hand that it's nothing but a hyped-up wind breaker. It'll keep you dry in a light mist, but you'll get plenty wet if a moderate amount of rain falls. If you just need a wind breaker, go with something cheaper. If you want something that'll keep you dry, spend a little more to get something decent. This product is a waste of money.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
My wife and I bought 2 of these jackets because they were so light and we needed something for the summer to keep in the backpack in case of rain. They are incredibly light and pack very tightly and are very affordable. First time we used them was in a moderate rain squawl (It does rain in the Pacific Northwest from time to time). Mine was OK but in a matter of minutes my wife was soaked to the skin...Fortunately we could seek shelter that day and we did, but often our hikes can last up to a week and getting soaked is a serious situation (hypothermia, etc.) Eventually the seams started to leak on mine but hers wasn't even remotely waterproof. No problems, take them back right? We only had the jackets a week after all...No, not so easy.[...]We only had them a week! Now we're out[$]and no jackets for the forseeable future and a kayak trip 1 week away! [...]

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
This is an excellent rain shell. It's very light weight, adequately breathable (use the pit zips and/or wear a wicking inner layer), and very waterproof. I use it working outdoors, cycling, walking dogs, rappeling, and hiking. Don't expect warmth, it's an unlined shell. But it works great for layering, and I use it comfortably in miserable weather and temps in the low 40s, with adequate layering. I've used it for two years now, and am very happy with it. It's a great value.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
This is my second Marmot jacket. I returned the first one b/c the taped seams started to come apart but decided to stick with Marmot b/c I liked the fit.
I will be returning this jacket as well. If I use it in even the slightest rain I am left feeling damp. If it were only while hiking I would chalk it up to sweat, but the jacket doesn't stop water even in city use.
The fit is great. It's a stylish jacket and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes being wet.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
I have used the Precip jacket for about a year and have enjoyed it's lightweight and very functional weather resistant material. It's breathable and can be used as a great top layer on colder weather outtings just by loading up on the fleece underneath. I feel the amount of velcro that lines the zipper and pockets is completely unnecessary and makes getting into the pockets a pain. The hood does roll up but does not zip off or look "neat" when in this position. Great item if you can overlook these particular down-sides. Love the bonfire color !

Comments about Marmot PreCip Rain Jacket - Men's:
I used my Marmot Precip Jacket while in the Palisades Mountain Range of Idaho. Like all mountains storms can come up without warning. I experienced both rain and hail in this jacket and it held up to them all.
It would have been nice to have some more pockets for storage and a little bit more breathe ability.
