    Comments about Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool:

This is a great tool. I'm a river surveyor who works in very sandy rivers most of the time. I have had several Swiss Army knives in the past. They have always been useful but lacked pliers and just couldn't hold up to all the sand and would lock up after awhile. As with any multi-tool, this tool is difficult to keep clean but has held up much better than the Swiss Army knives. This tool has been extremely useful and a good balance between weight, cost, and variety of tools.

      Comments about Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool:

When they started making these in Mexico the quality has gone WAY down! The blade release on this has snapped off, and i finally brought back my 3rd Blast and traded up to the "Surge"...we'll see how this goes

      Comments about Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool:

I bought the Blast for hiking because of its feature set -- it provides most of the tools a person might need in an emergency. I especially like the saw which I tested on some plywood and a stick having the thickness of my thumb. The saw quickly and easily cut through both of them. The wood file did a good job of smoothing down the cut edges. The scissors were more substantial than the ones you find on a Swiss Army Knife. And it comes with four screwdrivers.

However, the Blast is pretty heavy and bulky. I owned a Leatherman back in the mid-1990's, and I don't remember it being this heavy or bulky. I guess it's my fault for buying this online instead of looking at it first in a store.

There are a few things that trouble me about the Blast. First, contrary to what others have said about Leathermans, the knife was not sharp straight from the factory. It had difficulty stripping bark from a small stick and it could barely make cuts deep enough to whittle wood. This was easily remedied by sharpening it, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

Second, the bulk and weight of the Blast make it difficult to use for tasks that require control or precision of movement. Tightening the screws on my sunglasses using the eyeglass screwdriver was a frustrating experience. Whittling wood (even after sharpening the Blast) was difficult. I tried closing the two handles together, but that made the resulting handle too thick and bulky. I tried gripping just one of the two handles, and that seemed to work a little better, but it was still irritating to have the other handle sticking out.

Thirdly, the tool smells strongly of oil. I just can't see myself cutting fruit or food with this. It seems to be a tool better suited to the garage than a knife to be used with food.

I bought the Blast intending it to be my only knife/multi-tool on the trail. However, the ergonomics are not good due to the bulk and weight, and I just can't bring myself to cut food with it. I bought a second knife – slim and light with good ergonomics – that I'll use as my primary knife. I'll keep the Leatherman for emergencies, because if something does go wrong on the trail, the full feature set will come in handy.

              Comments about Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool:

This knife is great. Not for most ultralight hikers, but it's great around the campsite, garage, or job site. It is a "multi-tool" so there are some compromises, but overall a good, quality tool. My tool also came with a leather case which was a nice touch.

                  Comments about Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool:

The knife seems to hold up rather well. I chose the blast because of its price and what it offered in terms of tools compared to the more expensive leathermans. Mine did break, and i was very disappointed for not having mine for what i thought would be weeks through the warranty. But to my surprise, i got it back in less that a week. It was very dirty when i sent it in and it had several broken parts, but when i got it back i honestly couldnt even tell if was the same knife, it seemed brand new. So my point is, it is a good knife, and even if it does break, you wont be gone without it for long. I still find that it is worth getting.
