Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

I have slept on these for years, last summer in Alaska for a month in the outdoors, it was perfect for backpacking and sea kayaking. Because it is a closed cell foam it is completely waterproof meaning I could strap it to the outside of my pack (or kayak) and get it constantly wet then all it needs is a quick shake to be dry.

Obviously, sleeping on cold hard ground is not exactly comfortable, but I believe because of its durability (these things are INDESTRUCTIBLE) and convenience it is better than anything inflatable, I actually bought a full length self inflating thermarest but have only used it on one (my first) backpacking trip, I found that the tiny bit of extra hassle (unrolling and making it inflate at night, making sure it's dry, worrying about rips and tears, packing it up in the morning etc etc) was to much stress because all I wanted to do at night was crash, meaning that whatever slight (and i really do mean slight, I can't remember feeling any difference) comfort and warmth that was lost was made up a hundred times over by the simple easiness of it.

Another thing I loved about this was that as I said it can be strapped to the external part of a pack so when taking lunch breaks it was so easy to get out and sit on, and because it is so tough it withstood all my abusing it on gravel.

Buy this if you like simple easy to use things, are paranoid of breakages (like I am) or wetness inhibiting the effectiveness of an item, or if you like one thing that can be used for everything (the kind of people that eat their entire back country meal with a bowl and spoon).

I could not give a higher recommendation, literally, this pad may have saved my life during a storm in Denali national park, because during a storm in a 6 day backpack EVERYTHING was damp, the inside of the tent particularly and this pad kept the holy sleeping bag dry and therefore me warm.

ps have used as a sunbed and it is very good on sand... easy to brush/shake off, even the irritating stick-to-everything kind.

oh and it's really easy to clean, a wet cloth wipe and you're golden.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

As a first-timer, I went with the cheapest possible slice-o-foam pad, and my aching hips and shoulders paid for it! The Ridge Rest, my immediate purchase when I got home, was a bit more expensive than the lowest priced option but was definitely worth the extra [$]. Thermarest got it right with the ridged design, which gives the pad a much cushier feel than a flat pad of similar thickness, and the insulation value is great. While bulky, this model rolls or folds down, and can take a bit of rough handling (i.e. being strapped to the outside of the pack) without risk of a puncture. For an entry level model, this is really the best possible balance of durability, comfort, and price.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

It is what it is, which is a thin, light foam pad that'll keep you warm and give a little cushioning. I can't help but chuckle a little at other reviews that complain about comfort compared to a self-inflating pad. If you're looking for ultra comfort, lug out an air mattress (just don't forget the patch kit). If you're looking for lightweight, idiot proof (and cheap) insulation from the ground, this is your pad. It does roll up bulky, but the close cell foam doesn't absorb water so I keep it on the outside anyway (with tent poles rolled up in the middle).

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

This pad is very light and insulates well but is bulky when rolled up. You can use this to your advantage when packing to add stiffness to your pack, especially if it is a frameless pack.

I have also used this as a wind screen for my stove, but I had to be careful and hold it away from the flame the whole time.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

Like most reviewers said, it rolls very bulky and doesn't come with a belt clip to keep it rolled when not in use, had to make shift something, which adds to the extra weight.
Another sore point (excuse the pun) is that when its un-rolled, the head/feet part still wants to curl, which is annoying because it shorts changes you 6 inches from the top and bottom, and I get frustrated trying to flatten it. The ridges did well to keep me off the ground and help with temp, but they felt like I was sleeping on a ribbed washboard. may be with prolonged use it would wear out, but not after 2 trips and 6 nights. I ended up buying Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite - Short because it folds like an accordeon and that uses smoother egg crate design instead of washboard. no issues with curling ecause the Z is flat, no curls.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

I have had my ThermaRest pad for some time now. I have used it on many trips with no complaint. This is a much better option than inflatable types of sleeping pads... there is no chance of puncture on questionable ground, and it is far cheaper! I throw mine in the bottom of my hammock and sleep like a baby. Provides warmth and comfort on most any terrain, and can be used as a camp seat too. I love my ThermaRest.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

At low cost and respectable weight, this is a great pad for beginners or veteran hikers alike. The comfort is hard to beat, and if one is careful with gear selection, an ultralight load can still be reached with this pad...only then it's ultralight in comfort.

The only downside is that it's a poor virtual frame for frameless backpacks, instead having to be put outside the pack on my GoLite Jam. Luckily, the compression straps on the Jam go a pretty good job of making the virtual frame, so the Ridge Rest should be with me for a while!

I use it for everything. The ridges are a nice touch for extra comfort and warmth. It does tend to get a little worn after a lot of use, but hey look at the price. Great product.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Regular:

The other reviews do a good job of capturing many of the pros/cons. For me specifically I've found that although it's pretty large when rolled up, it does a great job of keeping me warmer when things get below freezing. Also - I can't say enough how nice it is to stick this under my expensive self-inflating pad knowing that I don't have to worry about that little stick poking through. I spend a fair amount of nights sleeping under the stars, so it's nice to have that peace of mind.
