Comments about Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills - 7th Edition:

This is the best and most comprehensive introduction to the outdoors that I have ever seen. IF you are a new climber just getting starterd or and old pro brushing up on technical aid climbing this is the book for you.

A bit to exaustive for the average backpacker though

                One word. Survival.

This book might save your life. I recommend this book to the average hiker and also the experienced survivalist. The book will teach your how to make ice caves , igloos, inform you on proper equipment, avalanches and signs of a dangerous mountain, ice axe techniques while hiking in the snow, to say the least it will help you survive the outdoors.

Be safe, your life is precious, don't take it for granted.

This book is often called "The Bible" and deservedly so. This book covers it all. Hiking and navigation, rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, expeditions, etc. Very informative, easy to read, with great illustrations to help.
