    There is nothing better than silk as an underlayer --keeps you warm; keeps you cool; wicks when wet. I've purchased silks from REI for over 25 years and they've worn like iron & felt like good silk. But about 6 months ago when I bought some new pairs I couldn't find what I liked and told REI had changed manufacturers. Bought them but they are nothing like the former quality. Will have to buy my silks elsewhere.

      After reading the first review I was concerned but ordered them anyway. No problems. I have worn REI silks for 8 years daily from Oct to Mar. I ride a motor bike all year and they keep me warm with just normal dress pants down to about 15 degrees and are comfortable to wear all day inside. The new version is not quite a smooth as the old ones but have been equally durable.

        I purchased these for a cold week on the Buffalo river. This was a week long canoe trip. I lived in the silk. They were so comfortable I did not know I had them on. I now use them in the winter playing golf. Want to stay warm, hit the silk.
