So, I would call myself a bit of a sock snob. I'm almost always cold and have for years worn heavy wool socks daily in addition to my trecking. After trying many other brands, the expedition weight merino wool REI socks are now the only socks I buy.

Thorlos are very durable, but don't stay up on my leg very well. They also don't stay as soft wash after wash. Smartwool design is more like the REI sock with thick plush knit and good elasticity, but they wear much faster and are much more expensive.

So, from my point of view, you can't go wrong with this sock for daily wear for you fellow hypotherms to expedition/mountaineering for the rest.

Comfortable, insulative (warm when you need it, but not warming when moving--which would make one uncomfortable), durable, and less expensive than SmartWool. What more could you want? These are my absolute favorite socks for heavier backpacking, as they provide the best protection for my feet. They are also great all around cold weather socks, even just for sitting around.

Great sock, I switched to these years ago when I compared them to the "wool" socks I was wearing. I thought "For 1/2 the price how can I wrong?" What was even better was that they were taller. I cover a lot of broken ground and don't use many trails when I work so I have tall boots. Well, a year or two ago I was left trying to figure out why these socks seemed to get shorter... they went away from offering an "over the calf" size to more of a mid calf. I have to admit I had to search elsewhere for an OTC sock with comparable fitness... back to the other socks, their hunting line offers OTC socks, which I have to get elsewhere. Fortunately most of these socks are still in my rotation... they take a lot of miles to wear out. Just bring back the tall socks, please.

I work as a firefighter on a hotshot crew and spend most of my summer on my feet in heavy boots and a pack on rugged ground. These socks paired with a good liner are all I wear. Great cushion, temp regulation, and durable (will last more than one season). I have put many miles on these socks and there is not a better heavy-duty sock made especially for this price.

I really enjoy wearing these socks - I cannot speak for their hiking etc. performance but I can say that I love lounging around my condo in Colorado in these during the winter. My friend likes them for snowboarding though (I ski and they would be to thick for ski boots I think)

These socks are great. Last year I changed over to only Merino wool socks in my inventory. Wool not only keeps your feet warm in cold weather but also keeps your feet cool in hotter weather. (I'm not a rocket scientist, so I can't tell you how that works but it does) They wick well and after a days work you can hang them up and they dry overnight ready for another days activity. This sock is a great weight for heavy activity. They offer a good layer of padding without bunching up which really helps in blister prevention. And last of all, I always smile when I see that REI on the toe. Great Sock

These socks are thick and soft. They cushion my feet and do not ever squash or collapse. It is a pleasure to wear them as they wrap my feet and ankles in luxury. Zero itchiness. These are none better for cold weather. REI makes lighter weight socks of merino wool for warmer conditions and I love those, too! In fact when my annual co-op rebate comes in, typically I spend it all on socks. I wash mine in the machine w cold water, delicate cycle, extra rinse. Hang dry. They last a long time.
