Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

I've never camped without one of these since my Dad started using one when I was a kid. There is something incredibly satisfying about using something so low-tech and simple. It isn't bright when compared to a backpacker's canister-fuel lantern or a battery powered lantern, but in the darkness of the wilderness it is plenty of light once your eyes adjust.

It is compact and durable -- I don't use a padded stow sack (heavy!) and I've never broken a globe in 15yrs. One candle will provide at least 9hrs of light, which is enough for several evenings on the trail if you don't let it burn through the night. With a little craftiness, a piece of foil can be fashioned into a reflector to direct the light downward for hanging over a stove or for reading a book.

With its compact size and no need for extra batteries, bulbs, or fuel canisters, it is a great fit for my minimalist style. I also like the fact that I'm not contributing dead batteries or empty fuel canisters to the local landfill. There is no need to be concerned at all about fire safety or suffocation when used in a tent -- if there was I'd definitely be dead by now.

On the negative side, occasionally the wax might gum up the insides a bit -- especially if it gets bumped while burning -- but it doesn't seem to affect the operation at all and I've always considered that part of its charm.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

I have been using these candle lanterns a long time. I love them. I have a north face bullfrog tent over 12 years old. I have camped in 3' deep snow in that tent and use this single candle lantern hanging in the tent, even though it is just a single candle that little bit of warmth has kept me snug and cumfy in some awfully cold weather. I think I have only broke one glass so far and that was in the super cold and hit the light and the hot wax hit the globe and cracked it. But was still useable.

I would say the only down fall to these are that I have had the candles melt in my pack on hot summer back packing trips when place where the sun heats them up through the side of the pack. So I make sure to pack them in where the sun wont melt them. Also the other note from above when it is lit if you hit the lantern or drop it or something to that affect you do get candle wax all over the inside, no biggie but takes time to get it all cleaned up.

But trully I wouldn't be caught back packing during any weather or anytime with out one of these puppies in my pack. They are inexpensive to keep running and I usually just go with a single candle per night in cold weather and in warm go with one candle per 3-4 nights. In the cold it will keep you snug in a bullfrog sized backpacking tent. Anything bigger like a dome or the such or with a bit of airflow I don't think it will cut the mustard. My wife also carries one of these when we backpack, so you can always double up if you need the warmth.

I have two and a 4 person dome tent they will take the chill off and they do help with keeping down the condensation in the tent. As for wax on the glass in the past I have used paraffin lamp oil to clean them then good old soap and water to good success.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

I've had one of these lanterns for almost fifteen years and the same one is still going strong. For very little weight it puts off a decent amount of light and more heat than you'd expect for quite a while, and you can buy accessories to reflect the light in a single direction to intensify that aspect. The glass gets covered in wax that I have trouble cleaning, but it doesn't interfere with either function; it's completely an aesthetic issue.

I never go camping without this little thing. Just be careful if you hang it from the rafters of a tent -- the little handle heats up quickly & you can burn yourself!

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

Have one for years(4 or so)good light output with standard candles,Iv'e tried the citronella candles and they seem to not burn the wick down quite right and you have to keep it trimmed or the light output suffers, does keep the skeeters away though. Keeps moisture down and is plenty of light in a 2 man tent with the down reflector. Hangs low from inside small tents and tends to get bumped.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

I got my lantern from REI nearly 30 years ago. It was a great source for light when backpacking on the AT during the pre-LED days. It seems to put out a lot of light for a candle. Now I tend to use it for power outages, on scout campouts, and as a substitute for a campfire when backpacking with a group in no-fire areas. I must confess that I am not willing to use it in a tent because of the fire risk (and the top heat shield gets very hot). I have found it to be very well constructed - only replaced one globe over the years (last year when my son dropped it on the hard ground)!

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

I've had this lantern for about 8 years and used it in lots of different situations. In the back of my truck under the canopy it has kept me warm at temps approaching 0. In a snow cave it made the cave warm enough to sleep with my bag open. In my tent I've noticed that the condensation is reduced with the candle burning--not sure why.

The candles burn forever, at least as long as advertised.

When I need a small gift for my outdoors friends I get them one of these.

I went on a three day hike with my cousin. He had one and it ended up being our only source of light, and it work amazing. It help us read maps at night, and cook. The candles has a long burn life, very reasonable priced, and extra candles are low cost.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Painted:

This little candle is great for almost all applications. With the design even under heavy wind it will not blow out. I use this for times when a campfire is impracticle or i just do not have the time before the sun sets. Gathering around this lantern is a nice way to pass an evening on the trail.
