    Comments about SmartWool Hiking Socks:

I purchased three sets of these SmartWool Hiking Socks while at TBS in Quantico, VA after my boots chewed up my feet on a force march humping with a 68 pound pack for 6 miles. I ended up with ripped open blisters all over the bottom of my feet, on and in between my toes. This resulted in not being able to walk well for a week causing problems with training. After replacing the insoles of my boots and wearing these SmartWool Hiking Socks, I went on a 9 mile hump four weeks later with a 72 pound pack and didn’t have any blister at all on my feet. I still have one set of these left, and they still hold up well working in Iraq. I plan to retire these when I get back, and purchase a few more pair. Great product; highly recommended, especially if you are going on a hike and don’t want blisters.

    Comments about SmartWool Hiking Socks:

I have purchased several pairs of SmartWool socks from heavyweight to lightweight over the years. They feel good at first, but they all wore out very quickly on the back of the hill and on the bottom. The sub thread weave cuts into your feet and is very uncomfortable. I had about 7 or 8 pairs that I have not figured out what to do with. The REI brand socks are a much better value for the money. I will never purchase SmartWool socks again, they are just not a good value.

      Comments about SmartWool Hiking Socks:

I was issued 2 pair of smartwool socks when I was a Navy Diver back in 1999. Currently I'm in the Army and I still have one of those pair of socks and they are the absolute best socks ever!! I've worn them in every kind of environment in every season. That includes 12 mile road marches, 4 mile battalion runs, sprint triathalons, 18 hrs on the deck of a ship soaking wet and 12 months in Afghanistan. They outperform all other socks. They keep you warm in the winter, they're not too hot to wear in the summer and you can wear them for long periods of time without a problem because of the moisture wicking properties. I recently returned from the NTC at FT Irwin CA where I wore my sole pair of smartwool socks for 3 days at a time more than once with no problem. The other socks I have, including some Army issued wool socks don't last more than one day.

The reason I wrote this review is that I came to this web site to buy more smartwool socks for my next Afghanistan deployment. The first review I read was extremely negative and very much unrepresentative of my experience with smartwool socks. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, especially doing arduous work while wearing boots, these socks are phenomenal.

      Comments about SmartWool Hiking Socks:

They don't seem to sell my mini-crew black/red version anymore (the hiking mid mini on the smartwool website is the closest I could find), but I felt this the best alternative for my review. I've owned my pair for about 2 years, and they have seen hundreds of miles (including 2 backpacking trips). They are still in excellent shape, and are the most comfortable socks I own. They are so much better than the REI brand merino wool socks that give me blisters. I will buy another pair of smartwool's if I ever need a backup pair or when these finally wear out (which I don't see happening any time soon). Pricey, but worth it!

These socks are expensive but are worth it. They wick moisture well and prevent trip destroying blisters. Combined with a thin liner sock you can't go wrong no matter how for you hike.

Without doubt smart wool makes the best socks. I bought these for firefighting and wasn't disappointed. They fit snug and last numerous days before needing to be changed. I have tried REI brand and Danner and these are the best.
