Comments about REI Candle Lantern Candles:

These are great and inexpensive for what you get. Cheaper then batteries and will work in any weather. They are great to add a bit of warmth in the cool weather months in your tent. If you use them long enough you will find where to pack them in your pack. I have had them melt from the sun, if I recall once to the point where I ruined them completely in a ziplock bag, and a couple time where they were just mishapped. So just pack them inside where the heat of the sun wont get to them. I haven't tried the beeswax style or the bug repellant kinds. But I am curious to see if the beeswax ones are less likely to melt with the heat of the sun, but don't think the added cost is worth just packing them better.

I've had one of the lanterns for over 15 years verry impressed now as for the burn time the cooler it is the longer it will burn I've had one last for like 11 hours for the price it's a good deal, have used the "bug" candles NOT IMPRESSED, I'd like to try the bees wax ones one of these days to see how they work out.

A competing store in Southern California sells a candle that looks almost exactly like this, but doesn't work nearly so well. The wick on the other product doesn't burn, so you have to keep blowing out the candle, cutting the wick, and relighting. What a hassle! Candles from REI and it's supplier are so much better! The junk candles have a rounded top. Stay away from them.

I've bought my first Candle lantern over 20 years ago at REI and have added serveral more over the years. The've beena life saver during power outages at my home. Consistant source or light at my hunting camp and on numberous backpacking, camping and kayaking trips. Simple, reliable light with some added heat for cold weather tent trips. Even added one to my survival kit in a water tight container for touring kayak.
