        Comments about REI Zip-O-Gauge Thermometer:

I own two of these. I keep one on a zipper on my backpack and the other on my sleeping bag zipper. At a glance I can see what the Temp is. Has a wind chill chart on the back.

          Comments about REI Zip-O-Gauge Thermometer:

In 1983, REI gave these out as favors during the opening of the Orange County, CA store, and I've had one of these dangling off the zipper on my Kelty ever since. It's simple, light, useful and worth having.

The wind-chill chart on the back is informative and it's always nice to have a relatively accurate measure of current temperature without weight penalty.

I wouldn't use this as a zipper pull, and the plastic isn't beefy enough to take much of a beating, but if you can dangle it somewhere useful, you'll find it to be an "old reliable".

            Comments about REI Zip-O-Gauge Thermometer:

This is a sweet tool that you will use. Better than old design as this now has a metal back instead of plastic (which seemed to insulate and prevent accurate readings) or cardboard/paper (which did not last).

windchill chart on the back is useful also.

The review that said it broke in a slot canyon is irrelevant, if you are in a slot canyon-don't put it on the outside of your pack.:)

              Comments about REI Zip-O-Gauge Thermometer:

Knowing an actual temperature reading is more legitimate than going around telling people "... it felt like 0 degrees."

A thermometer also helps to understand what equipment works and doesn't, then reliably compare it with a manufacturer's claim.

The Celsius and Fahrenheit reading scale is a quick and useful conversion reference between the two.

                      Comments about REI Zip-O-Gauge Thermometer:

Those on the rack at the store varied a bit in the temperature they showed. I picked the one in the middle. And it's fine at room temperature. Unfortunately, when it's cold the accuracy is horrible, e.g. 5 degrees low at 30 and 12 degrees low at zero.

                        Comments about REI Zip-O-Gauge Thermometer:

This is a very handy thing to have. I just clipped mine to the outside of my pack and it has worked wonderfully. The only gripe I have is that unless you're holding it at the perfect angle it is very difficult to read. Other than that, I'm quite happy.

I have these on a few of my packs. It is easy to just leave them there. Very light weight. They are somewhat useful, but the lines are small and close together, so it is hard to get an exact temperature. If I squint I can get withing maybe 5 degrees. If that is useful to you, then they work great. Really nice for cold weather hiking and camping.

I got one of these and connected it to a zipper on my backpack and headed down the Grand Canyon. By the time I reached the bottom, the alcohol tube had busted and red stuff was everywhere. I guess it couldn't take the constant banging it took on my backpack.

This is a really practical idea and hopefully I just received a faulty product.
