Comments about Suunto M-2D Locator Compass:

I love the design. Chose carefully. It is the lightest compass I've seen with the ESSENTIAL declination adjustment.

Fatal flaw! I've tried 2 of these. The needle gets sticky at even moderately cool temperatures, making it dangerously deceptive until you realize what's going on. Well above freezing, it jams completely. The liquid does not freeze; I think the capsule contracts, pinching the needle bearing. Useless. I'm surprised they're still selling these. Perhaps I got two from a bad lot (both from same store); test yours in a refrigerator (doesn't take long).

Like other plastic compasses without covers, the plastic quickly gets scratched and cloudy just from jostling around in your pack; improvise a cover for it.

Comments about Suunto M-2D Locator Compass:

Sure, a handheld GPS unit takes all the thinking out of navigation in the wilderness, but isn't it time you man up and do it the old school way? This is a durable, well constructed compass. If you're planning to use it off the beaten path, would highly recommend taking a class on basic navigation principles at your local REI to learn how to orient yourself on a map using a compass.

Comments about Suunto M-2D Locator Compass:

I didn't realize it in the store, but this compass was assembled such that when everything was set for 0 declination, everything was about 3 degrees off. When I went to return it, REI had 2 left in stock, and they all had the same issue. I was very disappointed because this compass had all the features I was looking for without breaking the bank. I ended up returning it and spending another $35 extra to upgrade. Good for REI's revenues...not good for my wallet.

Comments about Suunto M-2D Locator Compass:

I really like this compass, but after several years, there are a couple of issues worth mentioning. The plastic can crack if you toss the compass around a bit, which doesn't diminish functionality, but is a bit of a bummer. Also, occasionally the needle sticks, making it necessary to tap the compass repeatedly to get a bearing.

That said, it's a reliable cheap compass with declination adjustment that has never truly let me down. I tend to keep it in my daypack and take it places where I'd be nervous about taking a more expensive compass.

Comments about Suunto M-2D Locator Compass:

Great basic compass. Best value for having declination adjustment, luminous azmuth markings, and 1;24,000 scale for use with 7.5 degree quadrangles. I purchased one for each member of my new Boy Scout Troop and all the boys were able to learn how to take bearings with the M-2D within a matter of minutes. No one should go in the back country without a map and compass and this compass works fine.
