Overall great
The price is a bit steep for a bike bell, but I was able to snag it on sale. Really wanted something low profile as I don't have much real estate on my handlebars. I love this bell! It's not extremely loud, but serves my needs for approaching someone on bike paths etc. Also feels very well made and the metal dinger will last a long time.
Stealthy Bell
A bit pricey for a bell but I had a GC so I went ahead and got it. Bought to use on my gravel bike when riding the path to access gravel roads. I wanted a bell that was effective but wasn't so bulky and a maybe a little more on the stealthy side. This bell definitely delivers. It's loud enough and doesn't look dorky.
Looks better than it works
I bought this bell because of the sleek, slim design and the amount of space it freed up on my handlebars. The small size should have fit my vintage rode bike but it was just barely too small to close. I went with the large and even with the spacers they include, I couldn’t get the right fit. I had it secured for a week until it loosened again. As others mentioned it is not very loud and best suited for trail riding. When using it on the street, you’d be better off making your presence known by yelling. The Spurcycle bell is much better suited for my needs.
Broke after six months
I figured that by going with eh Oi Luxe rather then the 'base' model, I'd be getting a higher quality, louder, and more durable bell. Nope. Even with the improved striker, It was always on the quiet side, no louder than just saying (not shouting) "On your left". Then after six months or so the striker broke. The only reason I'm not giving it one star is, like others have said, a neat design, but poor execution.
Great low-profile bell
I gotta' give this bell some love! I don't understand the negative reviews. It's great. Plenty loud, and love the low-profile look. I might order another for my road bike; I like it better than the Spurcycle bell. Be sure to order the size for your handlebars where you want to put it. I ordered a L because my clamp size for my bars is 31.8mm, but of course the outer areas are smaller. I ended up mounting it on my grip and that worked perfectly.
Great low profile bell
Mounted this onto my road bike and like others have mentioned, you have to mount it such that nothing touches the metal part of the bell. If you do that, this thing is plenty loud enough to let pedestrians and other cyclist know that you're coming up around them.
Inferior tone to the large original version
I bought this to replace my original Knog Oi bike bell which was somewhat damaged. The original is a large and I had to pad the handlebar with rubber strips to make it fit- this is the small version of the Luxe which has a hinged metal lever instead of a spring attached plastic thumb piece . That may account for the change in tone, volume and sustain from this new bell. It is so inferior to the original version that I removed it and reinstalled the first one.which still works. I intend to contact Knog - perhaps the smaller size makes a difference.
Best there is
Love this second generation Knog. The 1st Gen. had been replaced because of the plastic striker spring distorting on two different bells. The rich, loud tone with the new metal striker is outstanding. As a former bike commuter, a bell that can be heard through traffic is imperative. Now, riding regularly on multi use trails, the Knog announces your presence even to ear bud wearing joggers.
sturdy ringer, clear strong sound
This bell was purchased for a cycling trip in Holland and Belgium, however it proved especially useful for riding the Schuylkill River Trail in the Philadelphia area. For situations where there is moderate pedestrian traffic this bell is great for getting through with no aggravation. It is easier for walkers to hear and engenders more sharing of the trail than voice. My tone of my female voice is not easy for others facing away from me to hear. If I am tired and dehydrated, that comes through as irritation in my voice. The bell is more polite. I get much better cooperation from others when passing using this bell. Groups walking three abreast almost always move over. This sturdier all metal model held up well to a rush hour commute that requires frequent use. The plastic ringer model of the Kong did not hold up to repeated use. This one is much sturdier. If it was not heard by others I ring it a second time, but it seems loud enough without being obtrusive.
Meh, not worth the price
Sounds bad when mounted. The striker makes a louder noise than the bell tone. More like a thunk followed by a low volume ring. Before being mounted to the handlebars it wasn't noticeable - it even sounded really nice. My handlebars are 31.8mm steel. I think the striker hit is being transmitted through the bars causing a dull reverb. Maybe it would sound better with more dampening material between the bar and the bell but there's no space for that. And no, it wasn't the cable routing - I routed the cables both within and and outside the bell - no change. Buy the cheaper Knog if you're set on it. It actually sounds better.
