This was a sale item and I needed a day pack with a hip belt and adjustable shoulder straps so I took a chance on it. After some hard use I can say it is pretty poorly constructed. The main zipper has already given way and won't lock in one direction. The upper chest strap is pressure fitted so the first time you put any stress on it it just pops off. I used a heat gun to soften it and re-attach, but it popped off again the next time I needed it. Not a good product .
I really like this pack. Can haul as much as 25 lbs if I am carrying lots of water and it is still comfortable but I think the 15 -20 pound range is this packs sweet spot. Not a lot of padding on the hip or shoulder straps but they both fit well and are comfortable. Side pockets are great for large water bottles, umbrella or snacks. I like the 2 compartments where I can keep my rain gear or an extra layer in the top compartment for easy access and the bulk of the gear in the lower section. I also like the easy access zipper so I can get items out without sifting thru the whole bag.
First I would like to correct some other reviews this pack is meant for about 15 to 20 pounds of gear anything beyond that is not recommended by ALPS engineering. I loaded it up the second it got here and went threw the motions of fitting it properly and for the very low amount I paid I could not be happier for short day hikes or even an overnight trip it will function beautifully and for longer trips my wife can use this pack and I can put the heavier load in a more compatible pack I recommend this at this price while it last it is an amazing value.
Right out of the box I was really excited. This pack has some cool features that I like. But is soon as I put it on and waited and I realized it wasn’t what I needed. I was looking for a pack with a sturdy internal frame and a substantial waist belt for some heavier day hikes or training hikes. Unfortunately this pack says it has an internal frame but it feels pretty soft to me. The waist belt is pretty thin and doesn’t do a very good job of supporting the packs weight on your hip. It ends up all on your shoulders. This pack is also designed for a mans frame. Meaning the chest strap is very low. I thought it was a unisex pack but maybe I’m wrong. The strap doesn’t go high enough on a woman’s chest. This would be a great everyday pack for someone who wasn’t looking to do what I am. Killer pack other wise!
I purchased this pack for a trip to Yellowstone to use for day hikes and basic use around camp and town. I found that this pack lacked stability and craftsmanship. It was flimsy, not well padded, lacked storage space despite 30L size and even fell apart on two separate pieces ( zipper and chest strap). I am a larger man and the pack felt pretty small on the arm straps. It lacked enough storage space and had too few pockets to keep things organized. I am planning on replacing for our next adventure.
Bought this pack as a 'personal item' for a flight. Haven't gone yet, but ended up using it on several ferries in one day and island hopping for the weekend in the San Juan's. Surprisingly, it didn't rain, so I didn't get to try out the rain cover (yet). However, the top mini compartment was way bigger than I expected. I fit my sunglass case, toothbrush, toothpaste, cell phone, wallet, wall charger and cord in it with only about half of the space taken. It also has a handy zipper pocket in there as well. The backside of the pack is very firm and padded (if that makes sense). Even with hard objects like binders in the pack, it wouldn't stab your back. I am 5'9 and the pack seemed almost a half-inch too tall for my back. I am used to Dakine bags, so maybe it is just me. No complaints so far, and actually liked the color more in person! only wish is that the main compartment zipper could open larger like a duffle or regular backpack. All in all, light way, sturdy, and everything fits in it. I had 2 pairs of pants, a fleece vest, a rain coat, a sweater, two shirts, a pair of fleece pants, a beanie and socks in there with no problem.
Unusual configuration that did not allow for much storage
I have been using this pack for the last 2 Summers as a day pack. Maybe not a perfect configuration for putting things inside or getting them out, zipper can be hard to open at first, but it feels very comfortable on my back. It feels light too. I really like the rain-cover on the bottom of the pack. The top pocket is very handy too.
The price was right at REI Outlet and I needed a pack. It works ok and I like the integrated rain cover. The water bottle pockets, though, don't hold a standard nalgene very well, especially one that is less than 1/3 full. It sounds nitpicky, but that is what people take on dayhikes.
Works as it should. The removable waist is great for air travel.
