The TR1 Mesh is true to size and are a very comfortable shoe I matched mine with a pair of Cressi Ultra Stretch Neoprene Socks, 1.5mm, which kept my feet warm in Missouri's spring-fed Ozark Mountains streams. They kept every rock out. The one drawback to the shoes is they are sand magnates. Luckily, the neoprene socks kept the sand off my feet but i have to stoo fishing, wading and exploring long enough to dump out sand. As long as you have gravel bottom streams or larger stones, you will love these shoes. I do want to mention when larger stones are covered in moss and super slippery, boots with metal cleats work better than these shoes.
I bought these shoes in Mar 2022 along with a pair of Altra Lone Peak 6’s (reviewed separately). In 10 months, they have just over 500 miles on them with a mix of pavement, gravel, rock, and dirt. They’re extremely comfortable, the rubber is very sticky, the rubber has worn well, and they shed water like no other shoe I’ve owned. They were amazing hiking through the rain in the PNW. The only thing keeping them from 5 stars is the durability of the shoe itself. You can see a hole in the toe of the left shoe and the black reinforcement peeling away on the outer side of the left shoe. That’s above average durability for the mileage, but it falls short of my top rated shoes.
I hate having to do this but it’s a reoccurring issue I have with Astral shoes. I’m a whitewater/wilderness guide in the Gunnison Gorge and do trips in the Glenwood Canyon. Me and other coworkers have bought Astral but now we’re leaning off them. I bought the green version of these Shoes last year in June…. I didn’t even get a full year of use before the mesh started ripping fall of last year making the shoe useless. Very unfortunate considering everything else with the shoe is practically perfect… I will say they are very comfortable and hold up extremely well on wet rocks but obviously they gotta be durable too especially for the price. Someone recommended the Danner Rivercomber might have to give those a try
I'm not going to say these are the best shoes I have ever owned, however they are incredibly good at being the only shoe I need. See, they are "good enough" at so many things, I find myself wearing them every day. I have never had another pair of shoes that can do as much as these. Taking the dog for a walk in the park, going out to dinner, doing yard work, wearing them around the home office, going for a family hike (even over rough terrain), riding my bike, sitting on an airplane, exploring a city, they are good in the rain/wet, and on and on (though I admit I haven't tried to run a 10k in them). They fit well and they tie well (great laces). They are light weight and they breathe well when it's hot. Others have mentioned the build quality, but after ~3 months wearing mine (almost) every day, I can report that they are holding up very well - no holes/scuffs and the sole is new looking.
Bad adhesive. Had multiple pairs of TR1 mesh and TR1 scufflers that had either the outsole/toe tip and/or mudguard/mesh seam adhesive delaminate within the first day of hiking. Cannot trust these shoes. Otherwise it could be a great trail shoe, great gripping sole.
I absolutely love these shoes! I initially purchased these as lightweight hiking shoes. This they certainly are. But, they've also become my favorite running and everyday shoe. They're great for traveling, and just recently I took them on a hiking trail that involved several river crossings. They're super sticky on dirt and rocks. And I didn't even mind hiking in wet shoes because of they're lightweight and breathable nature. These shoes also dry extremely quickly. Comfy with great support, I would recommend this shoe for various activities or for the person looking for one shoe that does it all.
Outstanding trail shoe. Used these hiking a very mossy stone trail from 1700s Japan and I was the only one in my group not sliding around. I’ve traveled the world with this shoe - it’s light, dries quick, and looks good. Will definitely buy another pair when they finally give out.
These are some of the best shoes I have owned. You can hike 5 miles to a waterfall with no socks on, jump in the water and play for a while, and then hike back, all with great comfort and performance. Great combination of a lightweight trail shoe and a water shoe. No need to bring two pairs of shoes on a paddle/hike combo trip. They have a very roomy toe box, and fit snug everywhere else. The grippy rubber on the soles is excellent. They don't have a stiff sole, so if you step on something sharp you might feel it. I wanted a great lightweight summer shoe that was versatile, and this surpassed all my expectations.
I love these shoes—fantastic grip, zero drop comfort, great ventilation, light on my feet! The problem—the mesh disintegrates on the sides. Not from abrasion or misuse—I wear these indoor for work. Went up 1/2 size with the second pair and they failed faster. I still wear them because they are awesome. Other Astrals are too narrow, so I’m going back knowing they’ll likely give out on me in 6 months again. I might need counseling. Shoes are less than 1 year old in picture.
I decided to venture outside of my normal La Sportiva trend of shoe purchases and try these. I just wore out a pair of La Sportiva Bushido shoes so that is what I'll compare these to when relevant. I hike mainly in canyons that involve water, slots, potholes, scrambling, etc. The good: -COMFY! I love the low toe to heel drop. The foot bed is also comfortable and provides plenty of support. -Perfect toe box-this one is so good it deserves it's own bullet...my feet aren't wide nor narrow. Just right! The toe box was perfect. Not too wide and not too narrow. Just enough room and incredibly comfy. The 'meh': -the grip was pretty good but my La Sportiva's were better. I used them on dusty, steep flat rock, slimy wet rocks, etc. I'd say that they're sticky enough for a non-technical adventurer. I wouldn't recommend these shoes anything technical or slippery (dust/water) like canyoneering.. The bad: -they got a pinky-sized hole during the first hike!!! NOT what I've become accustomed to. Maybe I'm a spoiled brat but I know there is better out there. -the white rubber foam on the sole is shredding already, and the coating on the toe-cap is already peeling as well. This is NOT a " get what you pay for type of scenario..there are MUCH better shoes for the same price ($125)
